Power naps, power lunches and now the buzz is about power yoga . So, what is power yoga ? It is a general term used in the West to describe a vigorous, fitness based approach to Vinyasa style yoga .

Most asanas of power yoga are closely modelled on the Ashtanga style of yoga . The term power yoga came into common usage in the mid '90s, when several yoga teachers were looking for a way to re-package the benefits of Ashtanga yoga and make it more accessible to a western audience. But unlike Ashtanga, power yoga does not follow a set series of poses.

Therefore, one power yoga class can vary widely from the other. What they have in common is an emphasis on strength and flexibility. The advent of power yoga heralded yoga's current popularity, as people began to see yoga as a way to workout.
Today, most professionals including celebs are opting for this form of yoga and find it a great stress buster. "Yoga - be it power yoga or Ashtanga yoga - really helps one cool down," says instructor Suveer Balvi. "Yoga helps one to switch off the mind and that enhances relaxation," he adds. Yoga has been in existence for ages as Patanjali yoga was used to train warriors, to help them maintain calm when waging wars. Ashtanga yoga helps one to learn to be calm. In yoga , when one does complicated postures, more than the posture it's the comfort factor of the person that matters. Yoga helps one live in the present. Earlier, people used to have a notion that yoga should be done only by the sick and the elderly, however, the growing influence of Western culture has reminded us of our own formats of health. Models and celebs like Shahwar Ali, Anchal Kumar, Pravin Sirohi and Tejaswini Kolhapure agree to the benefits of power yoga .

Says Shahwar Ali, "Yoga has helped me immensely; earlier, I was very impatient and restless all the time. Yoga has helped me maintain calm and gain inner peace which reflects on my face too. All my friends have been complimenting me on the glow on my face. I have become very content with myself. Yoga helps me battle all the stress which is a part of the daily life of every model. I practice it thrice a week." Adds Pravin Sirohi, "Yoga has a lot to do with breathing. Yoga teaches you to breathe properly, thereby helping us live longer. Yoga helps me control my mind. And with that I can control my emotions too.
