When pets help nab criminals

A dog in Tours, France, recently took to the stand in a court of law as a 'witness' to his master's murder.
The judge made the suspect threaten the nine-year-old Labrador with a bat and wanted to see if the dog's reaction could be used to prove that the man was responsible for the crime. Although this experiment failed, there have been other instances in which pets have helped nab criminals.

Dalmatian

Last month, a vet in Paris was ordered by a court to test the reaction of a Dalmatian who had witnessed the murder of its owner. The dog was shown photographs of the two men who were accused of the crime and the vet reportedly told the court that based on the dog's behaviour, the men in the photograph were most likely the perpetrators.

Parrot

In February, a pet parrot proved to be man's best friend when it helped the husband of a murdered woman identify his wife's killer in Agra. The man noticed a change in the behaviour of Hercule, the pet parrot, every time his nephew came home after the murder. This aroused police suspicion and the nephew was taken into custody, during which he confessed to the crime.

Cat

Cat fur can be a pain to get off your clothes and furniture, but this helped UK policemen nab a murderer. In 2012, a dismembered torso washed up in Portsmouth, England, wrapped in a curtain. Investigators found cat hair on the curtain, and after DNA tests, traced it to the suspect's cat. The man was found guilty of the crime.

Golden Retriever

In 2011, a 15-year-old girl was called to the witness stand to testify against her rapist. But when she was asked to point to the man who had violated her, the girl was unable to do so. To help put her at ease, a 11-year-old Golden Retriever service dog was allowed to sit beside her. The victim's demeanour reportedly immediately changed and she identified the culprit. The man was then charged for the crime.

In 2008, another dog, again in Paris, was called as witness after he furiously barked at a man who was suspected to have killed its owner. The murder was made to look like a suicide, but after seeing the dog's reaction in court, the judge considered launching a full murder inquiry.
