As the mighty king of fruits — mango — is back to tickle your tastebuds, TOI lists the wide variety of desserts created in the city from the summer fruit. Bliss was never this sweet...

What do you get if you combine the mischief of a juicy, messy mango with the good ol' Bangali mishtis? Mmm...heaven! And this summer, Kolkatans can get a taste of heaven by doing as little as heading to the nearest sweet shop. Yes, mishti merchants in the city have come up with some rather irresistible mango desserts. TOI hit the sweet trail to find out more...

Making the most of the versatility of mangoes, Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy has come up with the Mango Shingara and Mango Amrito. Needless to say, they are already a hit among patrons! Says owner Partha Nandy, "Though the fruit is available round the year now, the demand for mangoes is at an all-time high during summer. Mango Shingara is my mejokaka's (Prasanta Nandy) last creation. And yes, it's keeping us busy all day long!"

Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick, which has patrons lining up outside the shop as early as 7 am, is also inundated with demand for its aam mishti. "We've come up with the Mango Creme Brulee, Mango Lava Sandesh and Mango Gelato. Actually, Mango Gelato is master blaster Sachin Tendulkar's favourite. Last year, when he was in town during the IPL, he got it packed for his kids," Sudip Mullick says.

While sweet merchants are experimenting with several kinds of mangoes, Golap Khaash, Totapuris, Himsagar and Langda are the favourites. Says Subhojit Ghosh from Bancharam, "We make Mango Pulp Sandesh and Mango Narom Pak Makha Sandesh every year. But this year, we've come up with the Mango Doi Mousse. It's still in the tasting process, but will be available for customers soon."

Rabin Pal from Hindusthan Sweets, however, wants to wait it out for the best mangoes to arrive. "There are a huge variety of mango sweets to choose from right now, but you will get the best of the lot during Jamai Shasti," he says.

Soumen Das of Jadab Chandra Das, too, asserts that they are waiting for the Himsagar to arrive in the market. "Mango Chena Payes is our specialty.

But it needs to be made with Himsagar," Das said.

The Mango Indrani of Ganguram Sweets, too, is in great demand. "We are getting bulk orders for Mango Indrani. It's already a favourite with the customers," said Rahul Chaurasia.

So all you 'sweet' people out there, throw out the rulebook, skip the main course and begin with a dessert. It's time to celebrate the emperor of fruits!
