With the temperatures soaring, the party scene is fitting into the season, moving from the terra firma into the aquatic blue. Folks are getting pals together, sending themed invites, and adding food and games to the pool fun. It's not just a chance to show off the bikini and sarong flair, but also get some exercise. "Private pool parties are huge," says party planner Dhawal Oza, adding, "Not just for birthdays, people are having kiddie parties, sundownders, even engagement bashes all by the pool."
Aqua party themes
Hawaiian Bash
A hula dancer, a gorgeous sunset and some foot-tapping music is all part of the Hawaiian theme, which Dhawal says is most popular. "It's vibrant with bamboo shoots, scented candles as well as centrepieces on tables, and tropical flowers, like orchids and liliums, made into armbands and anklets. Hosts also ask for tropical print shirts and shorts as guest giveaways. The food is served in cut pineapples and watermelons to merge with the theme, so it gets really exotic."
Retro Mazaa
Going back to the Bollywood of the 70s and 80s is also a big favourite. "This is about the disco era, which was huge and people want Shammi Kapoor numbers and Dev Anand's Dum Maaro Dum," says organiser Bhavika Shah. It's about making a statement. Retro hats, polka dot swimwear and huge bumblebee glares are the dress code here. "People also want disco balls around the pool at the sunset pool party and ask for feather boas and multicoloured wigs for their invitees. We also once gave mini pendant discoballs to all those who win during games at the party," she adds.
Pirates Ahoy
Having a swashbuckling adventure by the pool is also a big draw. Says planner Meghna Chitalia, "We have been doing several pirate bashes of late. For these parties, you have marine life cutouts and an actual boat by the pool, that doubles up as the bar. Guests are given bandanas, eye patches, jewelled cummerbunds and there is a photo booth for their keepsakes. They also get to take home red and black flip-flops."

Minis work best
While a barbecue is ideal here, you can also serve mini foods, such as sweet potato fries, burger sliders, canapes and pizzettes (mini pizzas) as well as fruit mocktails, during a pool party.
Games:
Marco Polo and Water Selfies
Marco Polo: This is hide-n-seek- albeit a wet one. One person is chosen as Marco. He or she is blindfolded. When Marco yells "Marco", others yell out "Polo" and Marco has to touch someone by listening to their voice.
Netball: Here, guests are divided into two teams. Both sides put up a net and the idea is to try and score a goal by throwing the ball into the opposition's goal. Pool volleyball is also very popular.
Treasure hunting: Another fun activity is to have a treasure hunt where you throw a handful of fake coins into the pool, which have to be collected under a timer. The one with the most coins, wins!
