Spider-Man: The web-spinning hero faced death at the hands of Doctor Octopus, after swinging into the hearts of millions. In The Amazing Spider-Man #700, Peter Parker dies while battling the scientist turned villain Otto Octavius but not before doing the final good deed. During his last moments Spidey gives Doctor Octopus all his memories and helps him realise how he has wasted his life in villainy. Basically, Peter dies but Spider-Man's principles live on with the transformed Doctor Octopus.

Tom and Jerry: Yes, they died in the episode Blue Cat Blues. Jerry tries his best to stop the debt ridden and heartbroken Tom from committing suicide but in vain. The little mouse thanks his stars for having a loyal girlfriend but is deeply pained to see her going off with another mouse in a car with a 'Just Married' plank on it. The episode ends with the lovable characters ending their lives by coming under a moving train.

Superman: In the comic The Death of Superman, the superhero is shown to have died after succumbing to his injuries. The story is about a destructive machine man named Doomsday who wreaks havoc in Metropolis and goes on a killing spree. Superman succeeds in killing him but ends up losing his life as well. An animation film named Superman: Doomsday based on the plot also showed Superman being resurrected with full powers by a robot.

Brian Griffin: Family Guy fans were in for a shock last November when the beloved family dog Brian was killed off in an episode of the series. Seth MacFarlane,the creator of the show,explained the decision as a "lesson to all fans that teaches us not to take our loved ones for granted because they can be gone in a flash."Following widespread reactions from fans, Brian was brought back from the dead a few weeks later.

Sherlock Holmes: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed the detective from Baker Street in The Final Problem. Sherlock and his arch-rival James Moriarty die in a fight at the Reichenbach Falls in the story that was supposed to be the last one of the series because Doyle wanted to devote more time to his other literary works. But due to pressure from fans he had to bring the detective back to life in The Adventure of the Empty House. This event has been replicated in plays, films and TV shows based on the detective, the series Sherlock being the latest example.

Eddard Stark: Game of Thrones is full of shockers and sudden deaths make up most of these. Bridget Jones's Diary: Helen Fielding gave a massive jolt to the literary world when she killed off Dr Mark Darcy, the book's romantic hero and Bridget's love interest,in the third volume of the popular book series. Darcy's character was immortalised in the film versions of the book by actor Colin Firth and his death in Mad About The Boy had Twitter exploding with reactions from fans who were angry and sad at the same time.
