The bow tie is back

A lively substitute to the necktie, this men's accessory has been irresistible this season.

When you wear a bow tie, doors open for you. Your posture is a little more erect; your shoulders are a little further back; your style is a little more dynamic. It's about the re-establishment of the gentleman.' We couldn't have put it better than former American footballer Dhani Jones, who belongs to the growing breed of bow tie lovers that includes stylish actors Farhan Akhtar, Ranveer Singh and Johnny Depp.

BACK WITH A BANG
After becoming the weapon of choice for golden Hollywood greats like Sean Connery and Humphrey Bogart, the bow tie was lost in fashion wilderness for decades. Since last year, it is back from exile in such a big way that it's practically taking over the necktie. The red carpets of the Oscars, Baftas and Filmfare awards — besides men's fashion week collections in Mumbai, Delhi, New York and Milan — had suited men picking bow ties instead of the usual necktie. Bow ties aren't only neat and suggestive of good-humoured cheekiness; they have a major advantage over the necktie, especially for sloppy eaters. It's practically impossible to spill anything on a bow tie!

HIP AND UNIQUE
Bow ties used to be restricted to strictly formal events. Hipsters have redefined it by bringing it into casual and semi-formal wear in ways it was not originally intended to be worn. They are teaming it with short suits, wearing it with shirts and jeans, experimenting with prints and colours, and even substituting the blazer with leather jackets. Reigning popstars Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams wear bow ties with panache in their music videos —with shorts and the sleeves of their shirts rolled up — and with short suits at public appearances. No longer bound by the rigid sartorial rules of the past, the bow tie has been revamped and redesigned into an accessory that any savvy guy can incorporate for individuality.

THEN AND NOW
This men's accessory dates back to the 17th century. Croatian soldiers who travelled to France in support of King Louis tied a bow around their necks to keep their shirts closed, and protect themselves from wind and rain, since buttoned shirts weren't available at the time. King Louis was so impressed that he made it mandatory for his upper class subjects to wear these bow ties at the palace. Over time, the bow tie's fabric changed from white cotton to silk and it came to be considered a symbol of affluence. These days, the bow tie comes in one piece that must be knotted and in a pre-tied option which has two clips that easily attach to the collar. Although the readymade version is popular for its convenience, the bow tie that a man can tie himself looks much more elegant.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
The bow tie was the key in the signature looks of iconic Hollywood actors Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra to comedians Charlie Chaplin and Pee-wee Herman, and personalities like Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Groucho Marx

WAYS TO WEAR A BOW TIE
Ditch the jacket: This is the way hipsters are doing it. Lose the suit jacket and put on a pair of shades or a hat. Make sure your trousers are cropped and you aren't wearing any socks so that your mankles are in sight.

Do monochrome: A black and white suit or tuxedo with a black bow tie spells class. The failsafe combination is a white jacket with black lapels, a pair of black trousers and a black bow tie for a finishing touch. With a plaid shirt: Bow ties and plaid shirts are a match made in menswear heaven. Keep the colour story simple, so if the checked shirt is red and white, wear a red or black bow tie. If you're wearing a multi-coloured plaid shirt, don't wear a printed bow tie.

This year's Oscar red carpet was brimming with bow ties. Winners Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey acknowledged its popularity. McConaughey did so by teaming his monochrome tux with a black bow tie. Leto did a more audacious take with a red satin piece to go with his pristine white shirt and jacket. Balance out an electric blue tuxedo with a navy blue bow tie in velvet, like actor and stand-up comedian Vir Das did. You can never go wrong with a plain black bowtie on a black suit and white shirt. Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper shows you how.

Ditch the suit jacket and put on a pair of shades.
