Mead makes a comeback

The drink made of fermented honey is back on shelves in a big way this year.

The drink of kings is witnessing a revival this year. Made of fermented honey, it is usually blended with berries, herbs and spices. It was once considered the 'nectar of the gods', and was a beverage of choice for Vikings around 1000 AD. However, it actually dates back to an even more distant past — China in 2000 BC. It's the quintessential global beverage, since you can find honey to make mead anywhere in the world. Mead also falls in line with the trend of fermented food and beverages that is firing up this year's food scene. You can brew mead at home. Its colour is dark or light depending on the original colour of the honey you use. The taste depends on which flower's nectar the bees made their honey from. Added ingredients change its flavour too.

Cyser: With apple cider or juice
Hippocras: With grape juice and spices
