Give your dog a summer look

Shearing your pet dog will make him ready for the hot and sultry days ahead

As we get set for some scorching days when the mercury will soar northwards and drench us in sweat, do spare a thought to the canine member in the family. While we get our share of cooling by sweating it off, dogs don't have the same luxury. They have a very few sweat glands, on the paws and the bridge of the nose, so their only way to beat the heat is to pant or head for the coolest spot in the home when the mercury starts climbing. There's a simple way to help them cool it too -shear them.

Why shear?
Long haired breeds suffer the most during summers. Heat is retained in their thick fur to an extent many times more than normal and they can have a heat collapse! With plenty of dog owners opting for a salon-perfect look, giving your four-legged friend a summer cut is pretty acceptable these days. The summer look is particularly recommended for Tibetan Terriers, Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers and of course long-haired dogs. Shearing means leaves, parasites or dirt don't become easily embedded in their fur. Bathing a dog is that much simple and a chic -cut makes older dogs look younger. In fact, some dogs are initially irritated when they've become lighter after the shearing, but eventually they get used to the airy summer-look.

DIY
If you are confident of your abilities, it's possible to do this yourself. Of course handling the shearing equipment (available at pet care shops) is not easy, so get advise from a dog salon or a vet.

Experts use different shears depending on breed or type of coat. For example, short, long and bent shears as well as electric shears are available in the market. You have to choose the right one.

There's a specific shearing method for each breed. Consult an expert for that.

- Before shearing, wash your pet with dog shampoo. A clean coat makes it easier to get an even clip when shearing.

- A wet or damp coat could damage the blades on your shear and lead to an uneven clip, so use a towel and allow enough time to ensure that the dog's coat is dry before you begin to shear.

- Use a dog brush to comb your dog's fur and remove as many mats as possible.

- Make sure that your dog is leashed in a manner that is comfortable but doesn't let him wander

- Select the right blade and snap it on to the shear.

- Hold your dog still with one hand and stretch out the area of skin you are working on.

- Keep the skin tight to get a smooth cut and avoid scraping.

- Keep the blade flat against your dog's skin and shear. Work on one section at a time using long, slow strokes.

- Check for loose hair (that the shears missed) and trim them with scissors.

And in case you don't want to try it yourself, there are professionals who can shear your dog. So get your four legged friend that summer look and help him be cool too!
