Comic books... oh, who doesn't love Garfield, Archie, Tintin, Blondie, Dennis and for that matter, Asterix, Jughead, Calvin and Hagar? But to actually flaunt your favourite characters on your clothes and accessories can give you a different high altogether. How? Well, look around, sweetheart.
You'll find comic strip prints everywhere — on clothes, accessories, bags and even clocks and watches!
Homemaker Davina Thacker, who we spotted wearing a funky comic strip cropped top at a nightclub recently, said, "I like them for the quirk factor. Moreover, they are pretty exclusive in Kolkata at present. I bought mine from a flea market in Goa. My son, daughter and I also have pyjamas with Spider-Man strips."
Mehek Talreja, who bought an Archies kurti recently from a city exhibition, said, "I love Veronica and Betty, and so when I saw this kurti, I just couldn't resist it. My threeyear-old daughter loves it too. The best part is that it is so colourful! Also, now that lipstick and fan prints have become so common, it provides a respite."
Several entrepreneurs in the city have lapped up the opportunity in a big way. Somrwita Guha of Papercup, who herself is a student at XLRI and is in love with comics, said, "Garfield and Blondie are most in demand. When we started out with comic strips on bangles, it became a hit, and now we have started using the print on bottles and kettles."
Fahad Ahmed of F-Bloc said, "I get requests for Batman and Superman tees. Youngsters love Calvin & Hobbes, Archies and Tintin on coffee mugs and clocks." Parneet Mehra, who sells kurtis with comic strip prints at exhibitions, said, "The demand in Kolkata is huge. Youngsters like it because it's eye-catching."
