Obesity amongst teens is very common and one of the major causes is the sedentary lifestyle that we lead today.

Later in life, it causes other problems too like high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart problems, diabetes, hypertension, which in turn leads to unhealthy life. To combat obesity it is essential to work out regularly to keep all the problems at bay.

Exercise, at any age group, is important. It mainly helps teenagers because it reduces stress, burn extra calories, and reflects positive attitude towards academics. Junk and fried food adds more to calories that leads to weight gain. This is why apart from a balanced diet, any form of exercise is equally essential to keep themselves fit and healthy.

Explaining about kids' behavior Dr Kumaran informs, "Involving kids in outdoor games like football, cricket, etc. is the best way to keep them fit." There is no harm in involving them in an exercise routine, but the intensity and the form of the exercise has to be taken into consideration. He adds, "Wrong form or a high intensity exercise can cause damage to the growing bone ends, called epiphyseal end plates, which can affect the growth and development of the kid."

Since computer games are a hit among kids today, the concept of gully cricket or any other outdoor game is lost. Hence, there is hardly any physical fitness in teens.

Regular exercise improves immunity, improves cardiovascular capacity-stamina, reduces stress, regulated body weight, improves flexibility in muscle, and for the later years, reduces the risk of heart problem, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

Why regular workout for teenagers?
Reduce mental stress: Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind. It can also help in looking better by shaping the body. According to Tania Chandar, a physician, "Exercising helps a child in sleeping better and increases concentration. It also causes the body to produce endorphins, chemicals that help a person to feel more peaceful and happy. It can also help some people who have mild depression and low self-esteem." However, most importantly, exercise or indulging in a sport can give a child a real sense of accomplishment and pride at having achieved a certain goal.

Personality development: Workout, in the form of exercise or swimming, or any sport, increases confidence, self-esteem and autonomy. A 60-minute workout that includes moderate to vigorous physical activity each day can boost the confidence level in a teenager.
