Trend spotting: Velvet revival

Back in fashion, velvet signifies a new cool along with an old-world charm.

Traditionally, velvet is a fabric we wear to weddings and formal functions. What is different this season is the youthful yet royal avatars in which urban Indians are sporting it in ethnic and fusion wear.

Internationally, velvet is getting elegantly casual. Ralph Lauren's harem pants are a hit this season while Christopher Kane's cut-out velvet dresses are young and glamorous.

Here are different ways to seamlessly incorporate this luxurious fabric into your wardrobe for the winter season.

Menswear Velvet has undergone a renaissance in recent years and shed its dandy association when it comes to menswear. Bring a certain playfulness into an elaborate velvet ensemble through an unusual drape and length. Look for a kurta pajama in two contrasting colours (like black and red) that are regal at the same time. Florals are trending across the world right now, so use floral motifs generously through embroidery or applique work.

DON'T over accessorise if your outfit makes a bold statement. Wear simple sandals.

For men who like elegance in their formalwear, a Nehru jacket in velvet highlights the raw beauty of the fabric. Look for a dark colour and a fine cut. A pocket square in a vibrant shade will add a subtle contrast. Keep your hair sleek and side parted for a retro 1920s take.

DON'T be causal about this look. Keep the jacket buttoned up.

For a cocktail night, choose a velvet dinner jacket in a rich shade like royal blue. Make things interesting with subtle embroidery and a cummerbund. Jodhpuri trousers will complement the jacket beautifully. Keep the rest of the colour palette dark and neutral in order to highlight your gleaming statement jacket.

DON'T go too bold with neon colours. Stick to darker, jewel tone shades to suit the Indian skin tone.

Womenswear

Play around with the drape of sheer, lightweight, printed velvet to give it a sexy makeover. Worn with a strappy blouse, a sarikurta highlights the femininity and richness that comes with velvet.

DON'T opt for heavy velvet in a sari-kurta as it will add bulk to your form.

A gold-embroidered jacket redefines the richness of velvet. Wear one over a simple, flowy dress in a neutral shade like white or beige for a nice contrast.

DON'T wear too much jewellery with this jacket as it's ornate enough.

For a formal evening out, pick an ornate full-sleeve blouse to go with your sari. To redefine old-world luxury for a modern era, pick a black blouse. Keep the sari simple, except for a broad border that matches the embellishment on the blouse.

DON'T try this if you are short or heavy around the torso.

Velvet has gone casual on the international ramp at Canali and Christopher Kane respectively
