A south Delhi based agency offering these services delivers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food twice a day for dogs. And with a vet on board, they also offer personalised meals for the dogs. And it's not the same food that your pampered pet will be fed everyday, these agencies offer different meals, twice a day throughout the week. "Each dog has specific needs, for example, an old dog needs a low protein diet, while the younger ones need a richer diet," elaborates the owner of the agency, Abhishek Kapoor.
Still not happy with the platter, you can call in a special customised meal for your pampered pooch. Turn your dog's lifestyle healthy by serving him the finest quality chicken cooked in olive oil. While the economical range of such a meal can cost Rs. 1,500 to 3,000 per month, the premium range is available at Rs. 9,000. While the cost may be high, the services really do rank high on the practicality meter for many. Saumya Shrivastav, an MNC employee opted for the services because of the "convenience it offers." She says, "With the kind of lifestyle we lead, it's difficult to cook food for your pets everyday. It's far healthier to feed them freshly cooked food than canned or packaged food. And while you may not be assured of the quality of food they are eating, the variety of menus does ensure that they are eating a somewhat balanced diet everyday."
But then there are dogs that simply don't like cooked food. "My dog isn't fond of cooked food, so we have no option but to feed him specially procured packaged food and bones. Also these food delivery schemes make more sense for those who don't have ample time to prepare food for their dogs. In big families that's hardly an issue," says Vinayak Khare.
On the other hand, Anjali Sharma, a lawyer, orders one fresh meal daily for her dogs simply because they love the food. "My dogs really look forward to the cooked food packages everyday and once it comes they just gobble it down. The food is prepared keeping their dietary preferences in mind and they react well to it," says Anjali. But can't the same food be prepared at home, and come cheaper at that. Says Anjali, "While I do have help at home who assist me in looking after my four dogs, the dogs enjoy the food so much that it seems criminal to deny them the luxury. Ordering food like this can perhaps be looked upon as outsourcing. It just allows the help to focus on other things such as grooming and exercise of the dogs."
"And when the dog is so dear to you, the extra bucks that you spend on him don't seem to matter," says Deepali Khanna, who has been ordering specially cooked food not just for her pet labrador but for four street dogs as well. "Pre-cooked food is a healthy option for dogs. There are times when you are unable to give a proper meal to your dog, so rather than giving them bread and milk it's better that you give them a wholesome meal which is as good as home cooked food. Also these meals are free from salt, spices and sugar which are unhealthy for dogs," says Deepali.
Healthy or not these cooked meals certainly seem to be gaining popularity among the canine population. And with these new dog food-delivering agencies offering a fine spread for pets, the term doggy bag suddenly has a new meaning.
