My stories are about women: Jyoti Kunkolienkar

Jyoti Kunkolienkar, who has already three books of short stories to her credit, has written a fourth one.

She shares, "I have been working on this book for the last six years. 'Samarpan' comprises 14 stories which deal with women centric issues."

"I did a lot of research for the book. I spoke to the women affected by these issues. My stories include all my minute observations about society," she explains. One story is about women who are in the sex trade. "For this story, I visited red light areas to talk to the women and know their story." She continues, "After interacting with them, what struck me the most was that these women were not into this trade because they were of a loose character. Rather they were pulled into it because they had to sustain their families."

Jyoti has tried her hands at various professions like compering, directing, acting and film production. She firmly believes that writing is one such profession which remains with a person till the end of one's life.

Jyoti, who gave up her government posting thirteen years ago, says that writing and filmmaking are the two fields which she finds fulfilling. Ask her if she has any regrets for her decision and she replies, "No. I am very happy with my choice. I live my life the way I want to."

So what's her take on the scene of women writers in Goa? "Today, women writers in our state are aware of what's happening around them in society. Konkani writers like Hema Naik and Dr Jayanti Naik have written volumes on women centric issues. I want more women to write on such serious issues."

Jyoti has of late started reading translations of Gujarati, Assamese and Marathi literature. Recently, she translated into Konkani, Indira Goswami's book 'Jang Lagi Talwar'. Next year, I am planning to make a film on Goa's culture as most people associate Goa with only its beaches.

"There is more to Goa. I think one of the best medium to dispel such wrong ideas about Goa is through film," she says on a parting note.
