Move over ladies! The men might give you competition on the vanity front. With guyliner makeup and mancessories the recent big trend, another new fad now defines men's body shapes into seven specific terms. Thin, fat and lean are now passe, you might now have to check if your guy is a pear, or large built, cucumber (straight and lean) and more...
What the study found
The biggest number, 49%, admitted to being a pear like comedian Michael McIntyre, with some extra weight around their middle. About 9% were like the brick or generally broad all over, akin to pop star Robbie Williams. Most coveted shape? The cucumber, the lean figure that former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff has.
Impacts self-esteem
Regardless of what they may achieve, how they look can affect men's self-esteem, feels clinical psychologist Saloni Sawnani. "Unless you are comfortable with the way you look, it impacts your assumption of how others perceive you, which in turn affects your concept of trust. This brings about social anxiety and affects performance personally, socially and professionally. Remember, confidence helps you carry yourself better; so be happy with what you are. At the same time don't be complacent about things. If you need to exercise go out and do it, but before this reassure yourself that nothing comes in a quick fix manner."
Is a shape everything?
Exercise therapist Jeet Chowhan says that's the common misconception. "A tomato or snowman shape, of course, can mean there is an obesity issue, but shape has nothing to do with being fit. You might be thin on the arms and legs, but carrying a huge paunch, which isn't healthy at. Instead, strive for good aerobic endurance and musculature. You should be good at functional fitness — being able to do basic tasks plus social responsibilities without getting tired at the end of the day — that's the real test! If you really want a shape, aim for an overall well-toned one."
