Obesity among teenagers is a growing problem. And, parenting an overweight teenager is no cakewalk. Being overweight can take physical as well as psychological toll on your kid. Here are ways you can help...

Get a reality check
If you feel that your child is overweight, consult a physician or pediatrician. Talk to the expert about his/her Body Mass Index (BMI) and get a reality check on the amount of weight your kid needs to lose. With the help of the expert, set weight-loss goals for your kid.

Don't tease your kid
Often, parents take their children for granted and don't think twice before passing a comment on their weight without realising that this could have a damaging effect on the kid. Never make fun of your kid's weight by calling him/her 'chubby' or 'fatty', neither in front of your relatives nor when you are alone.

Set the right example
You might influence your kid more than you think. You can't expect your child to adapt to healthy ways if you don't practise them yourself. Get into a habit of eating healthy, if you want your child to eat nutritious food.

Talk to your teen
Instead of checking up on what your child is eating, understand why he/she is eating that. Your child might be faced with certain issues at school or may be going through some emotional stress and binge eating at home may be a result of that. Once you understand the reason, have a heart-to-heart talk with your kid.

Change diet gradually
Though your kid may be stressed about losing weight, don't encourage any crash diets or extensive gym routines, which may be damaging in the long run. Instead, consult a dietician for a healthy food chart.

Encourage healthy eating habits
Teens often have erratic meal times or skip breakfast completely, which is not healthy and can in fact lead to bloating. Encourage healthy eating habits at home. Set proper mealtimes. Stock up on healthy snacks at home. Make it a habit for your kid to have one meal at home, sitting at the dinner table with the family. Cook up interesting dishes at home that will deter your kid from eating out often.

Exercise together
Working out with your teenager will not only help the family stay fit, but also helps you bond better with your kid. Learn about the activities that your child is interested in. Go for evening jogs, cycling, swimming, dance workout or opt for trekking together, once in a while.
