Samosa outlets are in abundance in the city and it has undoubtedly been the favourite street food for Nagpurians. But of late, one can sense a change in the preference, as many Vadapav outlets and hawkers can be seen in Nagpur, clearly making it evident that the demand for this street food from the land of Mumbai and Pune is on a rise here. NT tracks the trend...
Increase in demand
Till recently, it was Ghugre Vadapav at Mahajan Market, Sitabuldi, that was known for this delicacy in the city. Then came Goli Vadapav outlets a few years back. But, in the past couple of years, various hawkers have started selling Vadapav in Nagpur, and according to them, the demand for this delectable delight has increased manifold in the past one year or so. Rajman Patel, a Vadapav hawker selling his wares at Shankar Nagar square, says, "I have been selling vadapav for three years. In the first two years, the demand for it was not much, but things have changed in the last one year.
The demand has increased very much as people are more aware about it now. I sell around 60 plates of Vadapav every day and also have additional orders from offices and various family functions too." Vidya Kathale, who sells Vadapav in Dharampeth area along with Sabudana Vada, says, "I've been selling Vadapav for seven years, but the demand has drastically increased in the last few months. In just two hours every day, I sell a minimum of 60 Vadapavs."
Difference in taste
The Vadapav in Nagpur comes with a different flavour compared to the Vadapav sold in Mumbai or Pune. In Mumbai and Pune, it is mostly served with a green chilli and the red chutney smeared in a pav. Nagpur hawkers enrich the Vadapav with ghee or butter on the pav. Instead of the red chutney, pudina and tamarind chutney are mostly used to add zing to the Vadapav. Also, the size of the pav in Nagpur is bigger. Pankaj Patel, a hawker on the VIP road, says, "The Vadapav in Nagpur is totally different from Mumbai and Pune. It is much richer in ingredients."
Breaks the monotony
For a city, which has always been obsessed with Samosa and Poha, Vadapav comes as a fresh change. Archit Jaiswal, a 19-year-old CA student, says, "I'm from Madhya Pradesh, and over there Samosa and Poha are the most famous street foods, just the way it is in Nagpur. So, for me it kind of becomes very boring to have samosa all the time. One of my friends, some months back made me taste a Vadapav, and I have been in love with it ever since. It not only satiates hunger for a longer duration but also comes in wide varieties, unlike Samosa."
