Bikaner doesn't really fall into the regular tourist destinations or shall I say that it is not one of the most popular tourist destinations and yet it has a lot to offer in terms of attractions.

If you think hard, the first thing you can remember about Bikaner are the Bikaneri snacks and sweets. In the harsh Rajasthan climate of Bikaner, hats off to the people of this place who work so hard to make their products a household name across India and the world.

History
Like any other cities of Rajasthan, Bikaner has its historical importance and has seen many kings over the period of time. The city was built by Roa Bika in 15th Century. During Mughal period they are associated with the Akbar and then Jahangir. The royal family of the place still lives in Lalgarh palace, the palace now has been converted into a heritage hotel.

Places of interest
I was rather curious to know that there exists a temple meant for Rats, yes you heard it right, there is a temple in Bikaner called Karni mata temple and it is said that she is reincarnation of goddess Durga and she is been worshipped by royal family of Bikaner. The most interesting aspect of the temple is that there are approx. 20K rats living in the temple and spotting a white rat consider very auspicious. Also, the leftover food by the rats is the prasad of the temple.

There are several forts which are beautiful in their architecture and so royal that you simply started imagining yourself as a king or queen. Junagarh fort is one such fort. Do get a guide to know more about the history of the fort. The collection of artefacts and paintings are simply breath-taking.

Lalgarh palace is another tourists attractions, it has a beautiful museum inside the hotel. The photographs of the royalties bring you to some forgotten history. Other places which can be visited in Bikaner are Bikaner Fort, National research centre of Came and Jain temple.

Shopping
Bikaner is a paradise for shoppers, you will get amazing leather products, wood works, ethinic furniture, sheep wool carpets and many more. There are many shops just outside the fort and give good bargain.

Food
Bikaneri sweets are famous all over the world. So, you should be prepared for all kinds of sweets and snacks. You will get absolutely piping hot jalebis, samosas, ghewars, gulab jamuns. You name it they have it. This place is food heaven for a vegetarian, but you may not find the typically famous food of Rajasthan as in the Daal baati churma,. Bikaner has developed its own taste over the period of time.

Climate
Bikaner is hot. The climate is dry as it is situated in the middle of dessert. India has only one dessert called Thar and Bikaner is a city in the desert so you will get temperature as high as 50 in summers winters are pleasant but the nights are very cold. Thus, the best time to visit Bikaner is between Nov-Feb.

How to get there

By air
Bikaner is yet to be connected through air, the airport in Bikaner is in progress, and it is supposed to be completed by September 2013. Till, the time the nearest airport from Bikaner is Jaipur or Jodhpur which is approx. 5 hrs and 4 hrs drives respectively. To know more about the flights, click here.

By rail
Bikaner is well connected through trains; the railway station called Bikaner Junction is well within the city and is well connected with all the major cities of the country. To know more about the trains, click here.

By road
The roads of Rajasthan are good, so any day a road trip in Rajasthan would be a good idea, as mentioned earlier, Bikaner is well connected with Jaipur and other major cities of Rajasthan through road.
