The flags are out and the late night lights are on. Mumbai's fishermen have already set sail to net in the best bounty of meen (fish), denji (crab), berengetti (lobster), bandase (squid), and maruvai (clams). If you are looking to try something apart from the tourist-touted Trishna's fabled king crab in butter pepper garlic sauce, here's where to go.
Apoorva (been around for 25 years)
Freshly grated coconut, curry leaves, chillies, ginger, and garlic. KP Shetty has his cooks starting their day with grinding this and four more kinds of masalas. From sukka to stew, this Mangalorean eatery's mantra has always been: fresh first. We suggest you ring up what everyone does — a plate of piping hot (and molten) bombay duck, prawn gassi (Rs 120) with neer dosa (Rs 15), and whisky.

Pratap Lunch Home (Been around for 52 years)
Once upon a decade ago, getting a table here post noon was rumoured to be a hellish task. These days, if quaint and quite is what you're after, Pratap is the spot for you. This eatery is as homestyle Mangalorean as it gets. Get the vermillion tikka sporting stewards to serve you sol kadi (Rs 35), rawas kalimiri tandoori (as per size; in pic) and surmai fry (Rs 200).
Bar: Yes CROWD: Office goers, media and families Fish sourced from: Fort Fish Market at: Lucky Mansion, Janmabhoomi Marg, Fort.
The Bombay Duck price metre Rs 130
Harish Lunch Home (Been around for 39 years)
Down the same road as Apoorva — on what is colloquially called Fire Brigade Lane — is Fort's most famous fish fry dive, Harish. Owner Girish Salian says he hasn't changed a thing from the predominantly Mangalorean menu his father set. Fried food fans should call for their lepo fry (in pic; Rs 80; sole) paired with a bottled brew. Other frys worth a try are murthi (Rs 180; kane or lady fish; on Wednesday Friday and Saturday), tarli (Rs 55; Indian oil sardines), gaboli (Rs 120; roe), and mandli (Rs 55; gold spotted anchovy).
Bar: Yes CROWD: Dive-y Fish sourced from: Fort Fish Market at: Off Rustam Sidhwa Marg, Fort
The Bombay Duck price metre Rs 80
Ankur Restaurant (Been around for 72 years)
Did you know that the street that this eatery is located on is named after Ankur's late owner Mudanna P Shetty? Fifty-yearold Devdas Alva tells us his father-in-law was Fort's Mangalorean thali and Udipi pioneer — with his New Welcome Restaurant. Looking for something besides the typical gassi and aajadina (sukkas)? Call for South Indian yeti rawa (Rs 350), a semolina crusted fried prawns preparation (in pic above); squid Kandapur (Rs 280; in pic), a North Mangalorean fiery red chilli masala sans coconut; fish Thekady (Rs 320), a ginger, garlic and red chilli paste creation, and fish Kochi (Rs 320), a ginger, garlic, pepper and herb dish.
Bar: Yes CROWD: Brokers, bankers, lawyers, old-timers, five-star staying foreigners & families Fish sourced from: Private supplier at: Near Cafe Military, Fort
The Bombay Duck price metre Rs 290
Mahesh Lunch Home (Been around for 36 years)
Mumbai's most famous lunch home can be credited as the only Fort fish eatery that has managed to successfully expand its operations to multiple outlets. Owner Sooru Karkera's fishy empire spreads as far as Thane and Pune, but all five restaurants still serve the same Black Andhra Pomfret Curry (in pic) and fish tikka (with that legendary green chutney) it became famous for.
Bar: Yes CROWD: Celebrities, corporates, and families Fish sourced from: Fort Fish Market at: Cawasji Patel Street, Fort.
The Bombay Duck price metre Rs 175.
