Housebreaking a pup needs patience and love

A puppy is wonderful bundle of joy. But when this cute four legged creature walks into your home, it is natural for him to feel a bit lost.

So it becomes important to give him ample time to adjust to the new environment. Your puppy will need time to learn things that you want him to and get rid of his natural tendencies.

Housebreaking a puppy and raising a new born can be similar in many ways! When the puppy comes into your home, he assumes that it is 'his' home and family. Harsh Taneja , a psychology student agrees, "Housebreaking my pup Lemmy, was very interesting and also tiresome, at times. I had to practice a lot of patience. Whenever he would chew on anything, I would gently pull him away from what he was chewing and instead give him his toy to chew on. Understanding him well during that time has lead to the strong bond that we share today."

Patience and love is the key for any relationship to bloom into something beautiful. Housebreaking can be tricky and can take a lot more from you than you expect. Swati Ravi , a software professional says, ' I got a Labrador a year back. Although housebreaking Simba was not a very strenuous task, it took lot of time. I trained Simba by giving him treats and appreciating him for obeying my commands. But when he misbehaved I would be stern."

When your new pup chews your furniture, cell phone, shoes or rather anything that it is not supposed to chew on, gently pull him away and stuff a toy, into his mouth. Soon, he shall realize that the only things he can possibly chew on are his toys and bones. There will also be times when your puppy will want to potty inside your house. If you see him sniffing around or squatting, just scoop him up and take him to the place assigned to him. Soon, he will understand what he has to do.

Dilip Gaikwad, a teacher by profession says, "When my dog Eion was two months old, he ate my cell phone twice. But now that he has grown up he understands his limitations. These pups can emotionally blackmail you with their innocent expressions, but one has to be careful and not give in to their demands all the time. I gave in and got my cell phone eaten up."

There is a very fine line between being cruel and strict. Remember, no matter how angry you get, never give your puppy a beating. A light smack on his butt is at times is acceptable if he gets very naughty. Also be stern when necessary. Your dog will slowly start realising the dos and don'ts. But if you show aggression, your dog is likely to sulk. After all as they say, raising a puppy is the first lesson in parenting.
