Beijing: The Peoples Republic Of China

To understand a gist of what China is all about, visit Beijing - the centuries of history, three whole dynasties, the unique culture, the communism still visible in the Mao Zedong imagery in the bylanes of Beijing and a cosmopolitan world capital that is up to speed when it comes to shopping and partying as well.

How to get there

By Air

You can fly into Beijing from Mumbai or Delhi. There are multiple flight options - Jet Airways, Singapore Airlines, China Eastern, Air China, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways - it all depends on whether it is pricing that is your decision maker or stopover points. Return Flights India - Beijing - India should be within the range of 35000 and 50000.

By Rail

Beijing, being the hub of China's railway network is well connected to all the major cities in China by train - Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kowloon, etc. So if you fly into any of the other cities, you can get on a high-speed train to Beijing. Travelling at around 350 km/hour, these trains are a good way to enjoy a few of the villages and farmlands of China.

Climate

Four distinct seasons in a year and huge extremes of temperature within Summer and Winter - that's what characterizes the climate of Beijing. In the summer months of July and August, temperatures are hot and sultry, going up over 35 degree centigrade. The locals are however on holiday during these months and the weekends have every single tourist spot chockablock with locals as well as foreigners. While the weather is most suitable for travel in Spring and Autumn, frequent sandstorms in Spring make the autumn months of September and October, the best time to visit Beijing.

Where to stay

If you're the sort who loves to experience everything when you're travelling, stay at one of the local accomodations - the old town Chinese houses in the hutong area (the bylanes). You can find 2 and 3 bedroom houses with verandahs for as less as 4000 INR per night. You can find rental options for these on www.airbnb.com

Of course there's always your luxury stay with Beijing having the biggest of hotel brands - Marriot, Shangrila, Ramada, Grand Hyatt, Crowne Plaza and the list goes on. There are also more reasonable local chains such as the Jialong, the Classic Courtyard, Citytel Inn and others. You can book these on www.booking.com

Food

Contrary to popular misrepresentation, China is not a country where vegetarians will not survive. The chinese eat a lot of vegetarian food as part of their diet and there are loads of pure vegetarian Buddhists residing in Beijing. It is because of this that a few of the best vegetarian restaurants in Beijing are frequented by celebrities, local and international. We had a meal at Gong Le Din, one of the best veg restaurants in Beijing.

Try the Sichuan cuisine when in Beijing, the ever famous Peking duck and perhaps some snake and beetle at the Dongan market.

Shopping

For shopping head to the Silk market. You can expect to get the best deals on counterfeit shoes, wallets and bags.

Places of Interest

Steeped in three dynasties worth of history, Beijing offers loads of sights to see for the history lover.

The Great Wall Of China :

This was probably my main reason for wanting to visit China. Having always seen it only on television or on the internet, there was an obvious thrill in visiting the Great Wall.

About a 45 minute drive outside of the city, the Great Wall has multiple sections from where one can begin the hike up the wall. Badaling is the most popular section of the wall followed by Jinshanling and Mutianyu. The wall is steep at points at either of these three sections so you'd be good to go to any of them. Looking around at the extension of the wall is absolutely wondrous. The wall used to stand at almost 22000 km however what's left of it today is around 10000km!

The Summer Palace

I never expected to be fascinated by anything in Beijing more than the Great Wall. However, the Summer Palace emerged a winner in my eyes. Calm, beauty, relaxation, history, culture, religion and people all come together right here. Spread out around the Kunming lake, this is what used to be the summer abode of the emperor. Even today, summers are welcomed by dressing down and heading down to the Summer Palace for a walk in the imperial gardens. Locals and tourists alike flock there in plenty.

The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City lies at the absolute centre of the city of Beijing. The three dynasties in Beijing, ending with the Qing Dynasty, used the Forbidden city as their imperial palace. Today, this is one of the most important museums in all of China. However, a word of caution - Do not attempt this Herculean task on a hot day. The Forbidden city is huge and walking in the heat could drain you out so much, you wouldn't want to take in the royal interiors which consist of more than 8500 rooms!

The Hutongs

Hutongs are the narrow back alleys in the traditional areas of the city. The old Chinese single storey houses are located here. These thin lanes can be navigated through on hired bicycles or via cycle rickshaw - yes they look exactly like they do here in India, except they're bright red. Start your Hutong tour by first checking out the Drum and Bell Tower.

SanLiTun

The epicenter of all lifestyle activities - Sanlitun has malls and stores, bars and restaurants. The best world cuisine restaurants are in this part of the city.

Food Street

You must take a walk down the food street at Dongan market. There is ofcourse the obvious sight and smell of the strangest land and sea creatures wrapped around on skewers and then there's the sights and smells of the Chinese people whom you will see in hoards. Its nice to stand around people watching here.

Closure Line

Amongst China's many Imperial Palaces, Colourful Customs, Cultured People and Crazy Cuisines, Visiting Beijing is perhaps the best way you can sum up this whole country!
