Meet Aruna Seth. This London-based Indian shoe designer has a royal following. Her highend shoes are worn by Pippa Middleton, Kate Hudson, Olivia Munn, Mariah Carey, Goldie Hawn, and Jennifer Lopez.
Her secret: Every shoe has a comfort padding known to give 'cashmere-like comfort'. Her design philosophy is simple. "My shoes are instantly recognisable to my brand. Each shoe has a curve on the side to elongate the legs. I use signature embellishments like the crystal butterfly," she says.
Celebrity sole
British and American celebrities love the red carpet look her shoes give them. Goldie Hawn recently wore her Cinderella shoes embellished with 3,000 Swarovski crystals. Seth's 'Lynn' silver sandals sold out completely after Pippa Middleton wore them to the royal wedding reception, with her famous green Temperley London gown.
"Celebrities love wearing high heels because they make them appear slimmer and taller on the red carpet. It is insane how high some of them will go!" says Seth, who can tell the psyche of a girl by the shoe she wears. "I firmly believe in this. Girls who wear 6-inch heels are usually super confident. Ballerina girls love to be comfortable. Ladies who wear leopard print shoes are probably more adventurous than girls who stick to plain leather. Girls who wear Swarovski shoes want to feel like a princess. A shoe can tell you a host of things about a person. That's why I look at people's shoes first!" she says.
Signature style
The butterfly is Seth's signature motif. "I've always loved butterflies because they embody freedom and independence. I chose the crystal butterfly to embellish some of my first shoe designs. The butterfly shoe has become a bestseller worldwide; we now create the design in over 50 different colours — from white and aubergine to black — and fabrics from Chantilly lace, leather to satin. Brides specially love the designs, seeing a touch of crystal from underneath a wedding dress finishes off a dream look," she recounts.
India inspiration
Seth's shoe fetish began when she was young. Her multi-millionaire father worked in a shoe factory. "My father has been in the footwear industry for over 50 years so I've been surrounded by shoes and shoe designers all my life. It's in my blood!" she states. Her design inspiration comes from travelling. "I take a notebook everywhere with me to jot down ideas. I love coming to India. It is one of the best places for stimulation — the bright reds and golds, fantastic materials like silk and intricate handmade jewellery."
Aruna's footwear tips for brides-to-be
1. Pick the right heel-height. Stiletto-loving brides may need to compromise on heel-height; your husband could be embarrassed in wedding pictures if you are towering above him. 2. Comfort is the key. Don't follow glamour blindly. 3. Pick shoes suitable for the venue. For example, wedges and flats are best for garden weddings to save your heels from getting muddy. Flat sandals are good for beach weddings. 4. Treat your feet. Pedicures instantly make you feel relaxed, refreshed and special. Remember to schedule a pedicure before your big day. Slip your feet into your gorgeous wedding shoes with soft skin, neat cuticles and glossy nails.
