Puppy showers to welcome a pet in the family

Move over the cliche birthday parties for pets. If you want to welcome them in the family, go the bornahan way.

With the Maharashtrian form of welcoming a kid being practised for pets, city dog lovers are all set to welcome the four-legged family member the traditional way. From showering the puppy with ber and til gul to giving it a holy bath, it is the newest trend that has caught the fancy of pet owners in the city.

Recently event manager Vinayak Raskar welcomed two puppies, Shiva and Jeeva in his family by arranging their bornahan. Shiva and Jeeva were showered with goodies and were given a hearty welcome in the family. "We also printed invitation cards for people to attend the ceremony. Silver pots, ber and puffed rice were showered on them after a small ceremony. Shehnai was played while the pets were given fruits and berries as gifts," says Raskar. To add to the celebrations, Raskar had also put chocolates in the goody bag for them, just like it is done to celebrate the first bornahan of a child.

Bornahans and parties are custom-made for puppies these days. Shalaka Mundada, owner of a city pet hostel, ensures that games during such celebrations are an interactive session between pets. "Parties hosted for pets should always be interactive. Care is taken to ensure that the pet is made to feel special. We also have theme parties with paw prints and bones making it more pet-friendly," says Mundada. "When we arrange parties for puppies, we try not to invite older dogs as it is difficult to ensure a rapport between them," says Nidhi Acharya, owner of a pet shop in Pimple Saudagar.

These parties help pups bond with other pups and also make the pet feel like a part of the family. If you are organising a bornahan for your puppies, keep it as dog-friendly as possible. If you are chalking out plans for a puppy shower, then here are a few things to bear in mind. Make the puppies feel at home during the ceremony as they should not get overwhelmed by such gatherings. As a pet owner says, "Organise games which involve puppies and their owners; they should participate in the games together."

Priya Poduval, owner of a city pet resort also has custom made cakes and gifts for such parties. From a carrot cake to a chicken kheema muffin, menus at such parties are what dogs love and drool over. And all such parties are held within a budget of ` 1000 and more.

Dos & Don'ts for a pup party
- Dogs love swimming. So try and organise a pool baby shower for them.
- Boneless chicken, salamis and sausages are a must-have in the menu treat for the pets
- Invite puppies and other dogs as they get to socialise.
- Make your pet feel special.

Bornahan is the traditional Maharasthrian ritual organised during Makar Sankranti for kids to get blessings of elderly people and have a good life ahead. They are dressed as Bal
Krishna and ladies and children pour berries and sweet jewellery on them.
