Adolescence is an age bracket when they are predominantly appalled at life. The reasons are many from hormones running wild, to the faintest idea of the fast approaching realities of this stage. Suddenly they start hating everything,
Once adolescencthood strikes, they turn vulnerable to bad influences and habits like those of drugs and other addictions. Teenage and adolescence is the age of confusion and identity crisis, when they are learning to adapt to the physical and psychological changes. Hence, it is obvious that they become vulnerable and it calls for extra care" says Qaisreen Akhtar, a Psychology student and a mother of two. Issues are various at this stage of life, so parents have a crucial role to play when it comes to keeping teenagers away from bad influences and addictions.
Research, over the years has proved that the main reason why kids don't use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs is because the right values have been inculcated by their parents, and so it is extremely important that parents talk to their children about drug abuse. This task is earlier done the better!
Here is enlisting a few ways that will help you to strike a perfect chord with your children.
Talk and listen to your children
Talk honestly with your child about healthy choices and risky behaviours.
Be the most understanding friend they can ever have.
Talk to your child regularly and make it a habit. Share the day's happenings regularly.
Ask your children their opinions and include them in making decisions. Show your children that you value their inputs.
Be ready to talk to them as early as the fourth grade. Explain it to them the ill - effects of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes. Pass on all the information that will explain the detrimental effects of drugs and how fatal it is for one's health.
Listen to your child's issues and concerns without any bias. Understand. Don't preach. Share.
Be a positive model to your child
Children imitate adults. Parents are the strongest influence that they have, so try and be the best role model for your children.
Provide guidance and set clear rules about not using drugs.
Demonstrate ways to solve problems, have fun, and manage stress without using alcohol or drugs.
Point out examples of irresponsible behavior, such as ones you see in movies or stotries that you come across in newspapers.
Remember that you set the example.
Avoid contradictions between your words and your actions. Do not use tobacco or other drugs yourself.
Help your children choose friends wisely
Encourage positive friendships and interests.
Check to see that the friends and neighbours your child spends time with have values similar to yours.
Get to know your children's friends and their families.
Find ways to get your child involved in sports, hobbies, school clubs, and other activities.
Help your children feel comfortable in social situations.
Look for activities that you and your kids or the entire family can do together.
Know to say "no!"
Teach your child how to respond firmly to someone offering drugs. It is easier to say "No!" when prepared ahead of time.
Firmly say, "No!"
Give a reason, "No thanks, I'm not into that." or "No, my parents would get really mad at me."
Prepare them to leave negative company, join other friends.
Such positive interactions will help to develop a positive character and lead to good peer relationships.
