Travelling with stories

She is a woman of many passions. Apart from being a trained public speaker, classical dancer and literature student, Deepa Kiran has also worked as a professional RJ for All India Radio, an education consultant and a freelance writer who works with children and teachers across the country.

But her varied experiences over the years drew her to that one the thing she believes she was "born to do" — story telling. Excerpts from an interview.

Born this way
I can't stop telling stories, I just have to keep it going. I think my entire life prepared me for storytelling. Engaging people and triggering their imagination through stories gives me immense joy. This interest towards story-telling was always there, but it wasn't till some five years ago that I thought I can take it up seriously. I have turned it into a profession from 2008.

A nomad, in search of new stories
My early life had a large role to play with the path I've chosen for myself. I'm basically from Tamil Nadu, but never lived there. I stayed mostly in Bengal. my mother has roots in Kerala... So you see, I'm a typical nomad. I love travelling and all of these factors have contributed a lot to my story-telling.

As a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, I was performing 'Stories' both on and off stage since the age of three. Now, story-telling is my life. The best part is, it can be done anywhere under the sun. My training in classical dance only helps as facial expressions are very important in storytelling.

Anyone can tell stories
I believe that anyone can become a story-teller, as long as there's empathy for the listener. This is very important when the listeners are young. The right kind of emphasis and enunciation is important, and so is letting the child understand your story. You should give the child the required space to imagine.

Technology is helping us move forward, but as adults, it's our own responsibility to give our children the joyful experience of story telling. Tell stories in a way where you get to see their expressions, their emotions and their enthusiasm. You could tell stories through painting, paper-cutting, art, songs and or any other interactive way.

It's important that you are curious about life. Be it a beggar sitting on the road, a blade of grass, the Salarjung museum or satellites — everything should tell you a story. Lose your inhibition and use your whole body to communicate.

Inspired living
I love Cassie spegnoli's works. She is a world renowned story teller who spent most of her time in India. She documented a lot of folk tales and methodologies. I began using her books, interpreting and observing her materials. My father, dance teachers and all my English teachers are my inspirations.

Story-teller forever
I'm going to continue with folktales in the future as well, and i'm planning to script stories on a couple of bhakti poets and some ancient woman of India. India fascinates me a lot and I will continue story-telling till my last breath.

My favourite listeners
In terms of reciprocation and response from an audience, I loved all the places where I've told stories. But in terms of volume and response, I love Hyderabad. However recently at the Mumbai Art Festival, I just loved the way the city audience reciprocate. They just go with the flow.
