Pop goes the pup

One has to meet Zico to understand why some pups are destined to be popular

I know some nice pups. One, two, three nice pups, barring one who is about to become a young adult, stays with me, and is as important as the son of the house might have been. Am not writing about him, he being my favourite baby on whom I can write a few thousand words and still feel dissatisfied.

Zico is a pup I got to know recently. A Golden Lab, he has been a part of a relative's family since the day he turned a month old. I have merely met this boy a few times, but what I know is that he is destined to be popular. What makes me think so? Oh, there are reasons. Quite a few of them.

The lad loves posing for the camera. He seriously does. He does a little tumble while looking into the camera's eye. He can rest his head on a cushion and strike a pose, much to the delight of every shutterbug and envy of other pups his age. Many pups - and elderly dogs too - are camera-savvy. But this Zico boy is special. He makes sure the lens man chases him, camera in hand, seeking a series of super pictures with him at the centre of it all.

The day I met him, Zico unleashed a series of befriending strategies on me. He came and sat near me, looking at me with emotion-laden eyes. Once he realised I had fallen for him, he stood on his back paws, held my shoulder and started rubbing his nose on my face. He conducted himself patiently, his eyes observing me to understand just how much I was ready to take.

Then, he took off. Like any other pup his age, he held my wrist between his teeth and started chewing. But in doing what he did, he was different. He chewed for a few seconds, stopped for a while, looked at me to see how I was reacting, and started chewing again. Once convinced that I wouldn't get angry, he sat down, relaxed fully, and continued to chew my wrist for a long time.

That day, when I left my relative's house, Zico walked with me up to the gate. He stood there, quietly, as I left the place. While journeying back home, he made me smile with his memories. With his cute body language and thoroughly charming behaviour, the little diplomat-cum-actor had made a friend for an entire lifetime.
