It's been just a few weeks since Chennai City Corporation started its budget canteens in the city. And you find people from every walk of life there ranging from working professionals and school kids to auto drivers and daily wage laborers. "I have been coming here every afternoon to have lunch since they opened. They serve quality food and quantity too is good," says Ramesh R, an employee in a city company.
Is the cleanliness compromised, as it is served cheap? Sundar, who works in a manufacturing firm in the city, says, "Though the food is served at subsidized rate, cleanliness is maintained here. They serve it in a steal plate which they wash well in hot water after every single use."
"We are strictly told by the contractor that the quality of food and cleanliness at the canteen shouldn't be compromised at any cost," adds Arokhya Mary, who takes care of the cash counter.
Many at the canteen are first-timers, who have come to try the food. "I am here for the first time. My colleagues have been telling me about this for the last few days. And I think many like me come here by word of mouth about the taste and quality of food," says Anand, who works in the High Court.
One gets Sambar rice for ` 5, curd rice for ` 3 and single piece idli for ` 1. "The quantity of food is extremely good. If one eats from a roadside food stall also, they will charge around Rs 18 for sambar rice and curd rice. But it will be good if they increase the price in budget canteens by one or two rupees and add an appalam and pickle with meals. But for five rupees, it's too much to ask for extra," comments Sundar, a driver in the locale.
College and school students too are regular customers here. "We have been eating from here since it opened. Food is tasty and more over as we eat food at a cheap rate, we get to have more pocket money," says Aakash, a college student.
Dinesh Kumar, a school kid says, "We practice almost every other day at the nearby ground. And it's natural we feel hungry after long hours of practice in the hot sun. Now we are able to suffice hunger as we pay little and eat more here."
