A slouchy posture? Undesirable. A slouchy silhouette? Undoubtedly elegant, especially when glimpsed in cubicled corridors, conference rooms and the spaces in between. It's a pulledtogether and grownup, yet carefree, style and the pieces are essentially luxurious. The roominess of the clothes is what gives this shape such a sense of comfort.
What it means
Think jodhpurs or highwaisted, cuffed trousers; silky pussy bow blouses tucked into softly tailored pants; loose knee-length dresses cinched at the waist with a sizeable leather belt. Or luscious drop-shoulder coats, capes and suede jackets flung over your shirt-andtrousers staple. The fabrics are rich and plush — suede, wool, velvet, silk, satin and jersey.
The feel is relaxed with a touch of androgyny. Ideas come from men's tailoring techniques and vintage fashion — especially New York in the 60s and early 70s. "It's a mix of contrasts. There is plenty of room to play around," says Delhi-based designer Ruchika Sachdeva. The silhouette, that has been Sachdeva's signature style since she debuted, is now echoed on catwalks worldwide.
Fashionable today
Slouchy chic is a soft interpretation of strength that started appearing with the oversize trend of Fall/Winter 2012. It is a look that is still ahead of the high street, but the New York, Milan and Paris catwalks for Spring/Summer 2013 showed definite signs of moving in this direction. Designers Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg, Jil Sander, John Galliano and Thomas Tait showed business-savvy, yet party-appropriate, collections in this shape. Apart from Sachdeva, Indian designers like Nimish Shah, Abhishek Datta, Meera Ali and Kallol Datta are purveyors of the style. One shape suits all Shah explains why slouchy chic is perfect for the Indian working woman. "We live in a tropical country with corresponding food habits.
Our bodies change on an everyday basis. Indian women aren't meant to be stick-thin like the Europeans. The slouchy silhouette enhances the right curves of the body, and because it's roomy you don't have to skip lunch either." Agrees Sachdeva, "That's the beauty of slouchy chic. It flatters practically every body type. You can use the oversized pieces to hide the places on your body you'd rather not display, and the fitted separates to showcase your best assets. For instance, a woman with great legs could opt for a fitted pencil skirt and a slouchy shirt.
Not clumsy or messy Pulling off this look is a game of opposites. The wearer doesn't want her 15 minutes of fame, but a lasting impression. "It sends out a clear signal that you aren't trying too hard but you aren't careless either," says Shah. But don't take it as a hint to look unkempt or frumpy. The rule of thumb is balance. The most voluminous pieces should get toned down with a hint of skin. Get ready to slouch your way to success.
Slouchy chic at work
Think low-slung, hands-in-pockets carefree rather than look-at-me sexy
Begin with simple solid-coloured pieces in clean lines and luxurious fabrics
When shopping, follow your own instinct instead of picking up your friends' choices
Wear a loose pair of cropped trousers with a fitted blouse or vice versa
To bring out your inner dork, team a conservative blouse and short skirt with neutral-hued sports wedges
What to avoid
Going overboard with masculine elements
Mistaking slouchy for messy or unkempt
Looking like you're trying too hard
Wearing two slouchy separates at the same time — the outfit needs something fitted to anchor the oversized pieces
