Kickboxing not only gives you that fab figure, but also makes you stronger

Kickboxing has been a rage with fitness enthusiasts for some time now. For many people, it is a 'cool' workout option compared to gymming, which can be monotonous. But there's more to kickboxing than just being a fun way of shedding those extra calories.

For a leaner & stronger body
Actress Shazahn Padamsee swears by kickboxing, in which she has been training for over a year. "I have a petite body frame and most gyms make me undergo heavy-weight training. There are chances of looking slightly muscular and bigger in that case. Girls may not look as muscular as boys because of hormonal differences, but they will end up looking bigger. I won't name the gym, but they made me do weights and I developed ugly quads! I looked bulkier. I had to look fitter for my forthcoming film, which is a beach flick. That's when I took to kickboxing. Now, I have become leaner and stronger. It also boosts confidence. I went to France on a vacation and piled on four kilos! Kickboxing is the reason I was able to lose it quickly."

It's different
How different is kickboxing from boxing? Kumar Sawant, Shazahn's personal trainer and kickboxing instructor, says, "It is a mixed martial art. There are many types of kickboxing — taekwondo, karate and jujutsu, to name a few. Boxing is only about punching, striking and defence. In kickboxing, you kick as well."

The preparation
Before beginning any physical exercise, it's essential to check and train your body accordingly. Celebrity trainer and strength and body-conditioning coach Abbas Ali advises, "For MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, it is essential that you are fit. We do not use the left side of our body too often. But in kickboxing, we do that. It ensures great flexibility.

But body-conditioning is important before you begin kickboxing. Start with a basic workout, something as simple as walking for at least 3 km a day. Then shift to slow jogging, fast jogging and eventually, running. Do this at least for a month before starting kickboxing. Instead of getting obsessed with low-fat, sugarless and unpackaged food, go for basic home-cooked stuff. Dal, roti, sabji and salad is sufficient. Avoid curry. Warm-up is equally essential. Before indulging in a 45-minute workout, which is sufficient when done thrice or five times a week, a 10-minute warm-up is mandatory."

Also, take small sips of water between sessions, so that you don't feel dehydrated. It's better to workout in an open space — rather than an air-conditioned one — as you sweat more. Food should be consumed at least an hour before the workout. A high intake of protein is also essential."

The benefits
Kickboxing is a great tool for self defence. Shazahn, who has started a campaign against eve-teasing with her dad Alyque Padamsee, says, "So many times, girls gets groped on the road. God forbid, but if that happens now, I know how to kick the offenders. Also, it's important to be physically fit than just look good."

Losing calories drastically is another benefit. The result varies from person to person, but on an average, you burn about 350 to 450 calories per session (one hour).

Kickboxing does not focus on any particular body part. It works for the entire body. Actor and stand-up comedian Umesh Pherwani, who lost 30 kg in three months, says, "I did kickboxing along with intense weight-training. Even 15 minutes of warm-up for kickboxing was exhausting. Stretching, running and kicking — free kicks in the air — help you gain flexibility and vent pent-up aggression and anger. It's a great stress-buster and helps you lose weight."

Quick tips
- Try kickboxing and light weights, avoid heavy weights in the gym
- Work out in an open space. That's better than an air-conditioned room.
- Customise your workout according to your body type and health history
- Kickboxing also works as cardio. Also, climb stairs whenever possible.
- Switch to green tea
- Get at least seven hours of sleep every day
