Innovative team building techniques

There's no denying that teams form the foundation of today's corporate structure. Good team dynamics and good working relationships between the members of the team ensure better workplace productivity and performance.

The idea is to foster teams that are divergent in experiences and skills, yet complementary in functioning. It is no surprise then that organisations are making a concerted effort to invest time and resources in building better, high performing teams.

Why teams matter
"Perhaps a decade ago, no organisation in India really concentrated on team building as such. It was more of a matter of chance-if it happened, it did. Today, the importance of teams has been recognised. It is now a widely regarded fact in the corporate world that efforts put into building teams are an investment that will reap benefits long into the future," explains Seema Barodawala, senior manager for marketing at a consumer durables company. Team building is no longer a luxury; it has become ingrained in the core and culture of every organisation that aspires to be more and let its employees do more.

An interesting viewpoint is offered by Bhakti Shivkumar, training and development - human resources at a media house, "Team building matters like never before. The modern day workplace is increasingly diverse and intentionally so. This makes team building a necessity, given the heterogeneous nature of the team at hand. Further, in a corporate scenario where attrition rates are so high, teams are one element that encourages stickiness. If you are happy in your team, you are likely to stick on at the organisation."

Bonding cues
Though the end motive of building better teams is the same, different organisations are taking different routes to get there. "In order to build better understanding and relationships between employees, we organise a lot of informal events and gettogethers where employees can mingle and meet, without the pressure of a work atmosphere. Every six months, we also organise Coffee House shows, which are basically platforms for our employees to showcase their talent. The event is completely organised by the employees.

We have teams that manage different aspects of the show, such as food, performances and decorations. The event goes a long way in fostering teamwork," says Purab Ghosh, accounts executive at an IT company. Outdoor camps, retreats and training programmes (militarystyle, if you will) are fast finding favour as corporate team building tools as well.

Specially designed modules teach participants how to be better team players-and give them an opportunity to implement their learning as well. Says Shivkumar, "Just last month, we took our employees on a two-day camp just outside the city. We had them do several activities in groups-games specifically designed to have them work together. When they came back, they were such a united, well bonded lot." Sports and sporting events are also being harnessed to bring bonhomie to the workplace. "We put in a foosball table and a table tennis table earlier this year. We have been organising interdepartmental tournaments ever since. Last month, we also organised a cricket match among departments. It was great fun and helped employees understand each other better," shares Partho Mukherjee, senior manager, human resources.

Organisations have figured that the best way to encourage team building is to give individuals a common goal or task. Says Shivkumar, "We redesigned our office recently, and left a huge wall in the recreational area blank. We asked our employees to come in together and However, when carrying out a peer review, it is important that certain guidelines be followed. It is imperative for the review to be confidential, so that employees are comfortable sharing their views. Additionally, reviews should be constructive in nature-rather than highlighting petty personal problems or grouses.

As the organisational focus shifts from solely the individual to how the individual functions in a team, team building tools and techniques will on. paint portraits of their teams on the wall. It was wonderful to see the creative collaboration both within and across the teams-and the physical manifestation of it on the wall!"

Peer reviews
Peer reviews are valuable tools in building teams if used optimally and correctly. "Peer reviews can strengthen teams tremendously. They encourage honest, transparent dealings between members of a team, highlight the strengths and areas of possible improvement and allows employees to feel accountable to one another," says Barodawala. Peer reviews allow constructive improvement in the team as well, allowing it to reinvent itself and veer towards better performance.
