People are indulging in preparing a whole range of beauty products for personal use. While some look back at historically-treasured concoctions, others experiment with the assistance of the trusted internet and make products ranging from lip balms, kajal, soaps, body butters and more..
How effective are beauty products made at home? Swathi, director of a beauty salon says, "Ingredients used at home today are not pure either. And, since there is a rise in women suffering from hormonal issues and drastic weather changes, people are getting allergic to several things. Therefore, it's a little difficult to indulge in home remedies for every problem."
Hair expert Sangita Raj, though, is of the opinion that home remedy is not a solution to every problem, she believes homemade products are effective only when made with full knowledge of one's skin and hair. If one knows what works for them, it is effective to resort to home remedies but results are always better if there is a balanced combination of home remedies and commercially sold products."
Sandalwood actress Sharmila Mandre who prepares a honey and lime paste as a remedy for her tan and an apple skin mixture for a face pack, says, "I truly believe natural remedies work best for skin and hair. Even while I was in Bangkok for a shoot recently, I used the honey and lime paste for my tan and it really worked."
Health benefits
Most individuals today are conscious of the beauty products they use and are practical about their purchases. They refuse chemicalbased products and opt only for organic brands in order to keep their skin healthy. Malavika Srinivasan, a bio-tech professional from Bangalore says, "I started making kajal myself because no brand seemed to suit me. Some would dry my eyes and some others would make them burn. So, I decided to go the traditional way and use Nandabatlu flowers (which we grow at home) and ghee to make my own kajal.
Easy to make
The ingredients listed behind containers of beauty products might appear complex, but when prepared at home, seem simple, easy to make and are also customized. Sudiksha Dhooria turned something she's passionate about — lip colours — into her hobby sitting at her home in Hyderabad. "Since I've loved lip balms and colours, I was fascinated about making my own balm flavours and to my advantage it worked for me," she says, adding, "It's very easy, a 10-minute procedure, if you know the flavour you're looking at. And since all the ingredients are easy to source and affordable (such as oils and flavours), it makes the process more enjoyable and worthwhile."
Lasting effect
A benefit in disguise is the lasting impact homemade products have on the skin and hair. While commercial brands might change properties of the skin and hair over a period of time, carefully made homemade products will not just retain the nature of one's skin and hair type, but will also bring about positive changes. Anketha Raman, who is gung ho about making different kinds of body butters, says, "Homemade body butters are definitely safe and beneficial because they don't have any side effects and also hydrate the skin well. And, since there are no chemical preservatives, the natural ingredients react better with the skin. Another positive element is the fact that one can change the ingredients depending on the season, to suit their skin."
