"There exist misunderstandings that books by Indian writers are not getting entry into the (Dhaka International) book fair in Bangladesh. I know that it is being spread that from Rabindranath (Tagore) to Samaresh Majumdar (leading writer in West Bengal), books of Indian writers cannot enter the book fair in Bangladesh. This is not right," said Anisuzzaman.
The professor emeritus of Dhaka University, who inaugurated the 37th International Kolkata Book Fair here, said publishers participating in the Dhaka International Book Fair will have to show letters from Indian writers permitting them to publish their books in Bangladesh in order to display Indian books in the fair.
"We want to prevent books getting showcased without prior permissions. Indian books can be displayed but participants will have to prove they are publishing the books legally and there is no piracy," said the 76-year-old.
With Bangladesh being the theme country of the fair this time, Anisuzzaman said such a move would further strengthen the mutual ties between the two countries.
Speaking on the occasion, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said both countries must ensure that prior permissions are sought from respective writers before their books are displayed in various forums.
"We need to take precaution that books neither go to (Bangladesh) nor come to our country without permission. Proper steps must be taken mutually to ensure prior permission is sought," said Banerjee.
Eminent personalities, diplomats and politicians attended the inauguration of the International Kolkata Book Fair, which will continue till Feb 10.
