On a wind-swept afternoon at Napean Sea Road, Neil Nitin Mukesh fires up his ginormous Audi Q7. He has to be at a Parel radio station in 40 minutes to promote his latest action-thriller David. It's been a hectic year, with two more films up for release. "I wish I could afford to work at my own pace so that I can focus on fitness a lot more," he says, letting us in on how his body works:
Starting young
Well aware that I come from a family with the tendency to pile on kilos, I trained my eye on fitness as early as class eight. I was a lean kid. Then one day, my bua said I was looking chubby. That's it...my father's cautionary came crashing down on me. Ever since, I've focused on being healthy. I was a restless kid who played basketball, volleyball and tennis (he played tennis for nine years at state level) to channelise my extra energy. I'd run 20 rounds at Priyadarshini Park. All that helped me grow. I was four feet nothing in class eight, and by class 10, I stood five feet eight inches tall. At HR College, I'd participate in fashion shows. All my seniors were smart and muscular. That's when I decided to bulk up. At 16, I hit the gym and began pumping serious iron.
Weakness watch
I treat sweets like medicine. If you have a little of it every day, it kills the temptation to gorge on a bad day. So I indulge in a bit of my favourites — Toblerone, milk cake, jalebi or gulab jamun.
Body plan
I hit the gym four times a week, focusing on a different part of the body each time. Circuit training is reserved for once every 15 days. I also alter my routine to 'shock' my muscles. I do cardio thrice a week — either cycling through Napean Sea Road for an hour early in the morning, or cycling at a fitness studio. And I continue to play volleyball with my neighbours.
My physique is what they call the 'chor body'. If you were to see me clothed, you wouldn't tell I'm muscular. I just have to flex once and it's all there. So when people see me on a shoot, in a vest, they are surprised.
Food wise
A man is what he eats. Seventy per cent of how your body shapes up depends on food while 30 per cent is what you earn at the gym. My day starts with a big bowl of cut fruit, a glass of juice, two egg whites and toast. Post workout, I have two egg whites and a protein shake. I follow the one-smallmeal-every-two-hours plan. Lunch is two rotis, dal, veggies and a bowl of fish, which is my staple meat. I love it in every form, and it's terrific protein. Sea bass, salmon and steamed pomfret with a hint of lemon are favourites.
I don't drink tea, coffee or colas, and eat no fruits post noon since they lead to water retention and a spike in blood sugar levels. At 4 pm, I have two biscuits and a handful of chana. Then on, I restrict carbs and load up on protein. At dinner, instead of roti, I have dal ka cheela (moong dal pancakes) with sprouts, salad and of course, fish.
Fitness funda
I associate fitness with happiness. You should be fit so that you stay happy. Fitness is not a quest for the six-pack. It is what frees your mind, it's relaxation. So even if you go for a brief walk in the evening and it relaxes your mind, that's fitness.
