I never go on diets: Bhavna Pani

Dancing keeps actress Bhavna Pani fit. In a candid chat she discloses more about her health regime.

My exercise regime

All my exercise comes from dance. I have done a diploma in contemporary dance, and also I am intensively involved in yoga, nutrition, Pilates and various forms of dance - Jazz, Ballet and Modern Contemporary.

Apart from this I'm also into Indian classical dance forms like Odissi and Kathak. I never go to a gym. I do not like weight training. I prefer doing free hand floor work, using my own body weight and resistance bands.

My fitness regime comprises cardio that I do by dancing for an hour or two daily and body toning- which is taken care of by my alternate days of Pilates and yoga. I swear by this routine. Its not time consuming. It's quick and effective.

My diet

Nutrition plays a vital role when it comes to fitness. I never go on diets. Short cuts always prove to be disastrous. I eat and drink healthy stuff. But the secret is to never leave your stomach empty. I eat small vegetarian meals every 2.5hrs.

I start my day with a glass of Bournvita milk and a very heavy breakfast (fruits, cereals or sprouts and porridge). I prefer home made, simple and healthy stuff for lunch- dal, vegetables, rotis. My evening snack is usually junk food. I crave something spicy in the evenings- like bhel or Idli Sambhar. But I still try to keep it as healthy as possible. My dinner is normally early, around 8 pm and it is the last meal of the day for me. So I eat very light. Mostly, I try to eat home made dinner, but in case eating out is unavoidable, then I have a nice salad and a pasta or some baked vegetables with a soup and a sandwich.

My problem areas

Luckily, I have been genetically blessed with a mesomorphic body type. If I workout, I look great. But if I take it easy for a couple of weeks, I start gaining weight. But fortunately, my lifestyle is very active and all the dancing keeps me in good shape. Although sometimes, I feel I lose a lot of muscle mass on my limbs (arms and legs), because of lack of sufficient intake of protein due to my vegetarian diet. I do not like the skinny limbs, I prefer the toned, athletic and lean muscled look.

My strength areas

I think my strength, flexibility and core strength (which is very essential for my dancing) are my primary assets. I can endure a high impact, strenuous activity for much longer than average. Plus I have been genetically blessed with lengthened muscles and strong abdominal core, which facilitate my flexibility and help me in my dance.

My fitness idol

Bipasha Basu. I really admire her hard work and persistent efforts to maintain her fitness level. She has literally sculpted her body. I prefer the athletic, full bodied, toned look rather than just being skinny. Along with a good body, one must have a healthy overall look - radiant face, good hair and an inspiring lifestyle.

My celeb idols (male):

Naseeruddin Shah. For starters, he is my guru in acting. Besides, I love him for who he is as a person. He is a master of his craft, but continues to rediscover himself even today. He is never satisfied and strives for excellence endlessly. I salute such dedication, passion and insatiable love for art. Only a true artist and a blessed soul can be so awesome in today's world!

My celeb idols (female):

Madhuri Dixit. She is admirable for being a woman of substance. I adore her for the way she has struck a balance between her high profile career and a very simple personal life! And needless to say, she is my only inspiration in dance. Before a show, dancers are busy rehearsing their dance... But I just sit in my room and watch videos of MD and I give my best performance!
