Party predictions 2013

Last year, Hyderabad's party people got a little too experimental with themes, and toed the thin line between quirky and being downright silly! Here is a list of party trends that need to be laid to rest in 2013.

Toga parties: A toga is a distinctive garment worn by the Romans. The fashion gurus found romance in the one-shouldered cut and made the garment popular world over. Now, if you are in possession of a toga dress and want to know who else in your friend circle has one, you need not throw a Toga party for that. Come on, not only is it silly, but it's also unimaginative to see so many women donning the same outfit. Think about this: if all of you wear the same outfit, whose look will you gossip about?

A self righteous bash: You've heard of desi Tomatinas and Halloween celebrations. But this one beats them all. With the success of the Aamir Khan-anchored show, Satyamev Jayate, P3Ps latched on the brand name to get some mileage. Yes, a Satyamev Jayate 'party' was held to raise funds for the underprivileged. While we understand the sentiments behind it, holding a 'party' under this tag smacks of frivolity.

Horrible Halloween: While we are still trying to figure out how Halloween celebrations became such a big deal in the city, we are bombarded by images of ladies dressed in ridiculous outfits for Halloween bashes, that were being hosted even after October! The idea is to be at your scary best. But some of our P3Ps just wore the tightest outfit in their closet in the name of a costume. Well, if you think about it, it sure did a good job of scaring us!

Fashion exhibitions: What was once a prime event in the city has now become so common that every other week, there is a 'designer fashion expo'. While some have managed to maintain the standard of the event, others simply share the same vendors. And in most cases, there is nothing fashionable about the ware. We've also witnessed major tussles between groups, who organise them. Give it a rest, ladies.

Movie screenings: Want to make a splash in the Page 3 circle? Just take the filmi route. Reserve a theatre on the first day of a movie release, print invitations and get popular P3Ps to grace your 'premiere' — voila! You're in. With so many movie screenings happening of late, guests are at times spoilt for choice.

Party people we would like to see more of

Upasna Kamineni: From being an entrepreneur who avoided the media like the plague to the shutterbug-happy socialite and star wife, it looks like marriage has done wonders for Upasna Kamineni and the shutterbugs. The lady not only looks like a million bucks now, but also manages to steal the limelight from her superstar husband, Ram Charan. Yes, at a recent high profile wedding celebrations in the city, Charan was seen shielding his wife from the paps who couldn't stop clicking on spotting Upasna.

Akhil Akkineni: With a dapper and suave dad like Nagarjuna and a beautiful mom like Amala, Akhil Akkineni is a photographer's delight. With the best of both the gene pools, the youngster turns heads every time he makes an appearance. Here's to seeing more of the handsome man this year.

Sania Mirza: She has bounced back like never before, bringing her 'A' game to the court. And after a long time, tennis ace Sania Mirza, was seen hitting Hyderabad's social circle. Looking better than ever, Sania was spotted at some high profile events and a few public awareness campaigns. The tennis ace even publicly shook a leg to Gangnam Style! Now, we wish to see more of this.

Trends we want to celebrate

Fashionistas ahoy! Hyderabadis got extremely fashionable this year. Maybe national designers opening stores across the city has a lot to do with it, or even the growing number of fashion shows — but the fact remains that Hyderabad put its stylish foot forward. More in 2013.

Coming on time: The past year saw Hyderabadis make a positive change to their otherwise notorious habit of coming late. Yes, for most part of the year, city folks showed up on time — be it at plays, concerts or other social dos. Now, this change made quite a difference to the social scene in the city with almost every event, enjoying a smooth run. Hopefully, this trend continues throughout the New Year.

Theatre scores big: The phonies were out. And 2012 saw the sifting of the self-styled theatre aficionados from the real deal. Only those with a keen interest in the medium made their way to plays across the city. Result? The cultural circle saw a boost with many plays, theatre festivals and workshops being held all around the year.
