Touted as one of the biggest trends this year, peplum is a popular style in the west. But how do you get it right?

The peplum, often described as a short and full flounce or the extension of a garment below the waist, is one of the hottest trends on the international runways this year. Peplum can accentuate a regular jacket or a dress, and add a quirky touch to an otherwise ordinary ensemble. Unlike many trends that are restricted only to the catwalks and worn only by fashionistas, this one is being embraced by many regular women because a flared ruffle attached to a bodice or a coat always manages to make a person look well put together.

Style experts however suggest not trying this look if you don't want to draw attention to your waist, because any additional fabric in that area will add girth. But if you don't mind your waist being the focal point of your outfit, the definition and structure offered by a peplum can make a person look both curvy and fabulous.

The best way to wear peplum is to make sure there are no colour clashes brought in by the peplum. It is therefore, best to use it in solid colours, rather than using a different print on your dress and another on the peplum. But you can use peplums with sequins, polka dots and graphic art if you want to draw attention to it. The best aspect of a peplum is the fact that it can help cover chunky thighs and is very figure friendly too.
