Mr. Darcy still takes my breath away: Hasleen Kaur

We have seen Femina Miss India Earth 2011 Hasleen Kaur grace many fashion events, walk the ramp for reputed designers and model for popular brands, feature on the Elite Fashion Calendar 2011, and even do a cameo in Imtiaz Ali's movie 'Love Aaj Kal'. We keep the glam talk aside this time and try to discover a new side to the Miss India we have not known before.

Hasleen is a book lover and keeps up with her reading habit. We speak to her about the authors she likes most, a book that changed her life and that one desirable character from her favourite novel for whom her heart skips a beat.

How much of a book person are you?
I don't think one can call me a voracious reader but yes, I do love reading in my free time and when I travel. On an average I read about 2 books a month.

What are you reading these days?
I just finished reading Mario Puzo's Six Graves to Munich that I had borrowed from a friend.

Your favourite authors and why...
Danielle Steel, Virginia Woolf, D H Lawrence, Jane Austen and William Dalrymple are some of my favourites. Every author that I mentioned here has a unique style of writing which I love and draws me to their literary works.

Any specific genre that you like reading...
I love romance, tragedy and history. The first two appeal to my softer side. The last one is always breathtaking as I discover something real that happened in the past and relive a bygone era through reading.

A book that has changed you as a person and re-defined your outlook toward life...
Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus by John Gray opened my eyes (chuckles) at a young age. The book was about how differences between men and women are considered universal truths. The book made me vow that I must strive to be different and try not to derive my behaviour from the spiritus mundi (spirit of the world).

A character from a book you fell in love with and who has stayed with you ever since...
Well, it has to be Mr. Darcy from Jane's Austen's Pride & Prejudice. He still takes my breath away.

A book you feel can be adapted into a film. If given a chance what character from the book would you like to essay in the movie. You can also indicate your own ideal star-cast
Danielle Steel's Wanderlust can be one such book. I would like to play the protagonist, Audrey. In terms of the star cast I would definitely like to feature opposite Colin Firth even though he's much older.

A film you feel has been true to the book you have read
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Do you think beauty queens are often stereotyped on their lack of interest and unawareness in books and good literature?
I do think perceptions are changing because after winning a beauty pageant, I've been invited to discussions, lectures, counselling and such like. NGO's too do not invite a Miss India for just publicity and glamour quotient. They need the celebrity to talk some sense too instead of posing for the shutterbugs.
