Check the wine bottle label which should tell you the place or region from which it was manufactured.
Check the appearance, tilt the glass away from you over a white paper or tablecloth and look at the rim of the liquid. The more watery and brown it is, the older the wine - and usually, the better, since wines - the red ones take years to get better.
When you are ready to hit the sack, take a spoonful - "Suck air between your teeth and through the liquid. Hold the wine in your mouth for a little longer to release as much of its flavour as possible," says Sumit Kumar, F&B director, Park Hyatt, Goa, who is a regular at wine-tasting events in European countries.
By sounding a like a truly knowledgeable sommelier: "Ask yourself what the wine tastes like. Is it fruity, spicy, dry, herbaceous or sweet? Whatever you think it is, look thoughtful, think up some fancy synonyms for the flavours and pause between saying each one out loud. You will really impress people," says Esha Kakar, a restaurateur.
