Food photography is catching on!

Taking pictures of what one eats is becoming a trend.

Imagine a colourful plate with fresh vegetables and hot, barbecued sauce drizzled over it? Or even a browned roast meat with some honey dressing, sitting pretty on a clean white plate... are you salivating already? If you ever thought that a nicely prepared fish or a well-decorated summer salad could look as much or even more appealing than it tastes, you're right! As food photographers who agree and say why they love to click what they eat or cook. Say hello to the trend of food photography...

Why it's so interesting

When Mihika Shah, an advertising student took up a friend's camera recently to click what her pal prepared for a birthday dinner, two months ago, little did she realise she would kick off a habit that she can't get enough of. Today, more than even eating the food, Mihika loves to click the pictures of it, adding effects and sharing the results of the frames with her pals. "And they (her friends) just can't wait for me to show the pictures to them. I guess what started as a lark has become big; I love the charm and excitement of shooting a food picture now," she laughs.

The idea is a growing fad today, says Mumbai-based food blogger Kalyan Karmakar. "It's a huge draw; I know so many people who like to do this, even as a hobby. For one, people love to share what they are eating. The second is, a sense of achievement and creativity after having cooked something. Then after sharing a picture they have friends ask them if they can get the recipe. So, eating is only part of it all.

Adds Kajal Tejsinghani, who also loves to take up her camera and shoot different foods. And, she states, a lot of her pals are trying to do so of late. "Look, you eat with your eyes, so plating, textures, etc are part of the excitement of a good recipe as visual appeal rules when it comes to food. I know so many people who want to click their table simply to capture the memory of a good time. If you like cooking it's also great to document what you're doing this way."

No expertise needed

Anyone can take up the camera, even one on a phone and indulge in this. Like Riddima Thadani, a housewife says, "I try clicking what I cook with a basic phone and don't bother about any major details, my friends say a natural food picture is so much better."

Explains Karmakar, "Of course, it's ideal to have good light, but if you're in a restaurant, just go with the light you have. Other factors like a little smoke and good textures can add drama to the photo."

Tejsinghani's tip is to learn as you go along. "When I first clicked an ice-cream cake that I had baked in Ghana, it was quite awful," she laughs. "But once you start doing this, you begin to judge the light and frame better, plan better and the visualisation increases. Remember, a food photo can make you evolve in every which way."

Their favourites....

From cheese oozing out of toasted bread, to a melting hot pizza and piping hot soup, certain foods lend themselves well to a camera.

Here are what food photo lovers recommend...

Kalyan Karmakar: There are a lot of foods that can look deliciously good in a frame. My own favourite is of a plate of waffles. It was beautifully plated, cut into four and had cream, a mint leaf and a sliced grape on it.

Kajal Tejsinghani: My favourite is of a honey shot, where the honey pours into the spoon, swells up and falls over.... magic!
