There's a lot of action associated with bar counters in clubs and pubs — sometimes there are flair bartenders behind them who wow patrons with their fancy moves; and sometimes patrons have a little too much to drink and things get either very entertaining or out of hand. Nightspots are now finding innovative ways to use their bars. At a recent event at a club in the city, models were spotted using the bar as a ramp, after which a woman got on the bar and danced. We explore this new counter culture.
Bars get ramped up
Fashion professional Ramesh Dembla, who recently showcased some of his outfits at a club in a hotel, got the models who were part of the show to strut their stuff on the bar. "The hotel people wanted me to do the show in the club, so I thought I'd use the bar as a ramp. I asked them to give me stairs going up to and down from the bar. As the models walked on the bar, they even did a jig," says Ramesh, adding that care was taken to ensure that the audience was kept at least two feet away from the bar since the models were wearing short skirts.
Model Jackie Shetty, who was one of the participating models in that show, says it was a challenge to walk on the bar as it was narrower than the ramps she's used to. "The width was all of a foot-and-a-half, so most of us were a tad nervous as we were in five-inch heels. It was a first for me, but I enjoyed the experience. It also helps when you have a receptive audience because, more often than not, you're feeding off their energy and that helps boost your performance and increase your level of confidence," she says.
Is it a bar or a dance floor?
Then, of course, there are instances when some of the patrons get into the spirit of things and get on the bar and start dancing. "There are clubs that encourage ladies who come to their parties to drink and get on to the bar and dance," says Vikram S, who works with an event management company. Event organizer Sandeep Kumar adds that in some cases, models have performed dance sequences as well. "We've requested local models to get on to the bar top and dance as a friendly gesture for some events," he says.
A different kind of dance bar
However, there are instances when there are women who get on to the bar and perform specially choreographed sequences, a la Coyote Ugly, and for a price. A choreographer who's based in the city says, "There's a club that has had a Coyote Ugly theme party and they used two dancers whom we've helped with the choreography. It's all done in fun and the dancers are on the bar for 2-3 minutes. It's not a show or anything, and it's as good as any girl dancing on the floor; it's just that they get on to the bar."
Sandeep adds that there are full-fledged Coyote Ugly acts based out of Delhi and Mumbai. "There are professionals in Mumbai and Delhi who charge between `15,000 and `25,000 per act. There are groups of foreign girls who will put up a Coyote Ugly or Vegas performance as well. But everything is clean, and it's all about the dance talent," he explains. But Sandeep says that none of these acts are based in Bangalore because of the laws against dancing in public places here. "While I have used such acts in Goa, I would not take a chance in Bangalore because it gets termed a bar dance here, which it's not. But it could get you on the wrong side of the law," he explains.
Raising the bar
The concept of using the bar as a ramp was expanded on at an after-party that was held at a star hotel during a celebrity cricket tournament. "The idea was to have a ramp that looked like a bar. At one point, we turned off the lights, during which time the bartenders hid themselves. When the lights came back on, the bartenders started walking on the ramp. Later, Sohail Khan, Bobby Deol, Venkatesh and Sudeep and all these guys walked the ramp," says an event manager.
