5 tips to care for expensive oil paintings

Owning a genuine oil painting for your home or office is a matter of pride. But to make this long-lasting and durable art a part of the family for generations it needs proper care and handling. And preserving an oil painting is not at all a difficult task provided you do it the right way.

1. Room selection: Paintings are displayed at the best place at home where it gets maximum views, but room selection is a handy task. A room should have proper lighting, but make sure to hang paintings away from direct sunlight, bright overhead lights and fireplaces. Don't keep the painting in the room with fluctuating temperature and also make sure, the wall where the painting is to be hanged is not damped/moist, as all these conditions tend to harm the painting in many ways.

2. Hanging the painting: Before you hang the painting, make sure the hook is appropriate and strong, so that the painting doesn't fall and get damaged. Don't rely on regular nail for hanging a priceless painting.

3. Handle with care: Whenever you need to take down the painting for cleaning, always handle the frame without touching the surface of the painting with hands. Never use a rough cloth piece to clean the painting. The hands should be washed and dried to avoid the moisture from damaging the surface of the painting.

4. Cleaning of painting: The painting should not be regularly cleaned, but only when required. The front of the painting should be cleaned gently with a soft brush to remove the loose dust on the painted surface, alternatively a soft micro fibre cloth can also be used as the painting requires soft treatment and not harsh. The back of the painting could be cleaned with soft brushes.

5. Expert call: If you find any insect infestation, any yellowing or damage on the painting, wrap it in a bubble wrap and take it to an expert/art restorer for examination or restoration, as the case may be.
