Asprinkling of masala, a few pieces of raw mango, a dash of nimbu and handful of muri — take this interesting, crunchy concoction and savour it by the beach, letting the cool breeze blow through your hair. Nothing says leisurely bliss more than munching on some muri mixture by the beach in Vizag. Spread across the beach road, from the YMCA to the RK Beach Road, the muri mixture stalls at various points are a must-stop, not just for locals but especially for curious visitors to the city, who want a taste of Vizag's favourite snack.
Vizagites love their muri mixture. In fact, they savour it more than once each day. Venkat and Raju, are regulars who make it a point to munch on this street side delicacy at least two to three times day! "I love eating the tangy muri while taking a walk along the beach. It's a good snack to munch on," says Venkat. While there is a regular stream of local patrons at these stalls, curious and gastronomically adventurous tourists too don't mind taking a bite of this spicy mixture. "I spotted a lot of people gorging on it. So, I thought, why not give it a try?" says Ajay, a tourist from Gujarat.
The stall owners meanwhile, do brisk business throughout the day. Nagu, owner of a muri mixture stall at the beach confesses to having at least 100 customers each day. "In fact, my father also used to run this stall before me and he did that for almost 40 years!" he says. The fact that the mixture is priced at an affordable `10 also makes it an attractive snack option while taking a stroll. The age group too is are as diverse as the ingredients in the muri — from children, teens, young adults to older people. Some older folks admit to growing up on this street side delicacy. "I've eaten the muri mixture ever since I was very young. I used to come here with my friends," reminisces Manoj. Santhosh, another regular at the stalls, quips, "The interesting thing about the muri mixture is that even though it's such an easy method of preparation, you can never get the same taste at home. So, you just make a trip to one of these stalls to savour the flavours."
Raju sums it up by saying, "It's a part of the Vizag beach experience now. If you go there, you make sure you have the muri mixture!"
