Unlike Mumbai and Pune, which draw tourists for their vibrant social and nightlife, the town of Aurangabad is usually a stopover with limited options, including local sightseeing across some historical monuments. But, there's something that Aurangabad exclusively offers for adrenaline junkies — the option to take to the skies. This town boasts of a couple of sites for recreational adventure sports like parasailing, paragliding and paramotoring, and tourists are often seen making the most of these during season time.
Aurangabad resident Dinesh Marwadkar, a civil servant, is a certified flying instructor, and is one of those who takes tourists on these rides. Marwadkar, along with two other city residents, holds a license for these air sports and routinely plans weekend outings for tourists. Speaking to us, Marwadkar says that the three activities, especially paramotoring, are rapidly catching up in the city. While locals are not as keen, it's the tourists who bring in the most business; also because the local hotels have tie-ups with them.
Says Marwadkar, "I wanted to become a pilot but that's a dream I couldn't fulfill. So, I went ahead with paragliding. I'm certified from the Aero Club of India. Some people from the city are also keen to learn this. From next month, we are also planning to introduce new facilities and take children, or people who weigh less than 50 kg, with us on paramotoring rides. We're hopeful it'll become very popular with tourists."
He adds that the season for these sports has started with November, since the wind direction will favour flying. There are 2-3 sites at a distance of 20-25 km from Aurangabad where these sessions take place. For parasailing, people usually shell out ` 300 per head, for paragliding it is ` 1500-2000 per head and for paramotoring, the most expensive of the three, it is upto ` 2,000 - 2,500 per head.
