Now, gender-neutral toy sections!
One of Britain's biggest department store recently reopened its toy department with a renovated mantra: no colour coding for toys! The new look had pink dolls and blue planes alongside each other resulting in a common world. It was realised that a gender divide was erected at an early age through playtime.
How it held sway
With the way stores segregate areas, it was found that girls are often pushed in the direction of princess-themed toys and dolls while boys are urged toward planes, building blocks and trains. With Britian's biggest toy store removing genetic signage, it has gone down well with people.
Mother-of-three Carrie Goldman, from Chicago, is happy this has happened. Her seven-year-old daughter came home in tears after classmates teased her for bringing a 'Star Wars' thermos, saying that toy was for boys. Goldman put her story up on her blog and within just days, people rallied around with support. Experts found that the negative effects of implementing gender norms is prominent in the right development of a child. It was felt that children should not be taught to associate gender with colours.
Parents debate
Parents blamed toy makers for telling children 'pink is for girls' and 'blue is for boys'. They also agreed one should let kids be who they want to and choose what they want. One housewife felt parents would really be saving their child from getting bullied or differentiated through the move.
