Couture corsets for festive wear

Bustiers and corsets now come specially designed as outerwear to replace the standard cholis and saree blouses

Back in the Victorian era, the corset was a wardrobe mainstay. Its main roles were to ensure that outer garments were styled well and that the curves showed in all the right places. But in the 21st century, the humble corset's role has changed dramatically. While it is still the most important fashion item for styling curves and lending support, designers are challenging its role as an undergarment. In the 1980s corsets came back into high fashion and couture, being used more as outerwear than innerwear by the likes of popstars Madonna, Rihanna, Fergie, Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Designers have been sporting corsets at fashion weeks — Derek Lam in 2008, Matthew Williamson Spring 2009; Alessandra Ambrosia in 2009; Dianna DiNoble in 2011 — and in wedding dresses — Blush By Us 2011.

Now, corsets are weaving their way into Indian wear. CorsetDeal.in, a global fashion house with a signature online store for high-end and authentic steel-boned corsets has introduced a range of Indian ethnic corsets keeping in mind the approaching festive season. The new collection is available in ornamental, brocade, satin, lace and silk finish.

Meticulously crafted, these couture corsets offer women an opportunity to experiment by combining styles — mix the silhouettes of the East with the comfort cut of the West. The new collection takes the tropical Indian weather into consideration and features soft cotton textured inner lining that promises to keep heat and humidity at bay.

The range features traditional Benarasi designs in silk and brocade with vivid colours, floral patterns and geometric figures. The corsets can be teamed with a lehenga for garba or with a traditional outfit such as a saree/lehenga for Diwali or for a wedding to create a dramatic statement.

4 tips for buying corsets

1. When buying corsets online, find a professional site and ask what the bust and hip measurements are, so you know if it will suit your figure.

2. Buy the best you can afford, even if you have no intention of waist training.

3. If you are an unusual shape, or if you want to start serious waist training, you will probably need to get a corset made-to-measure.

4. Remember to carefully evaluate how curvy a corset is before buying it. You will need one which is curvier than you already are.
