Maxi dresses make a return

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 24 Oktober 2013 | 18.47

Effortlessly stylish and a good day to night choice, the maxi dress is one classic which has found its way into our wardrobes.

Floor grazing skirts and maxis are having quite a moment right now. They are comfortable, feminine and stylish, blending all elements of fashion in one long package. This trend is flattering and has transitioned effortlessly from a summer style statement to a fall mantra.

Says fashion consultant Anne Mishra, "Choosing the right length is tricky, but once you get the proportion right, it is an incredibly easy wear. It also transitions well from party to formal wear."

Accessorising your maxi skirt well, more or less does the trick. Glamorous flats and a contrasting sling back with a messy, open hair will do the trick. You can also go for a simple monochrome maxi skirt with a headband and bangles or team it up with a jacket and high ponytail for a more rugged look. Colour blocking is the way to go this season.

"I like how comfortable and versatile this look is. You can play around with it and dress up or down without losing the element of style. They are comfortable and keep you cool in the heat," says college student Richa Tripathi.

How to wear
Contrary to popular belief, short girls need not avoid this stylish trend. In fact, with the right length, it accentuates your petite figure. If you still feel uncomfortable, there's the magic word — heels.

Strike the right balance: If your skirt is well fitting, opt for a looser blouse or jacket. Similarly, if the skirt has a full, busy print keep the accessorising minimal. A denim jacket is an all time favourite among most fashion geeks.

Experiment: Make the look yours and as personalised as it gets. Loose, slouchy sweaters, tank tops, denims. Belts can help flow the top and skirt into one. Fashion is all about going that extra mile and taking a risk, isn't it?

Get rid of bed bugs

Getting rid of bed bugs is a difficult fight. More so, if the infestation spreads across all the rooms in the house. Bed bugs not only travel easily via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture but also multiply in a matter of days.

However, no treatment is required for bedbug bites. If itching is severe, topical steroid creams may be used for symptom relief. Secondary bacterial infections that develop over heavily scratched areas may require antibiotics. Unhygienic conditions boost the growth and spread of bed bugs in the house. Go for regular pest control. It should be done preferably twice a month depending upon the infestation. Bedding and garments which are prone to infestation need to be bagged and laundered at 120 F minimum, because these items cannot be treated with insecticides.

Freezing may also work, but may take several days. It may be an option during winter months when finding hot and sunny locations may not be possible. Although thorough vacuuming may not catch every single bug and egg, it will help get rid of some of the infestation before treatment with insecticides.

While vacuuming, make sure you cover cracks and crevices. Dislodging eggs is extremely difficult. So, scraping as you vacuum along infested areas, such as fabric folds of beds and sofas and the perimeter edge of wall-to-wall carpets, is more effective. When you have finished make sure you place the vacuum cleaner contents in a sealed bag. Maintain a hygienic environment to avoid further infestation.

How to budget your travel expenses

If you plan properly, you will be able to get to your favourite destination and that too within your budget.

People normally feel they can't afford a vacation just by looking up the internet and seeing the high cost of airfares and hotel tariffs. But the good news is, if you plan properly, you will be able to get to your favourite destination and that too within your budget. Here's how to go about it...

1. Book your air tickets about 6-8 weeks in advance. Tickets are cheaper if you book a round trip. The airlines give a " discount" to round trip tickets.

2. Avoid travelling on weekends since this is when people tend to travel the most and airlines raise their prices too. The best time to fly is between Tuesday and Thursday when flights are at the cheapest.

3. A good alternative to hotels is staying in hostels. They are for all ages and not only for students. Hostels also provide private rooms.

4. If you are looking to pay nothing, consider using couch surfing. It connects travellers with people around the world who let them stay in their home. The couch surfing websites take steps to provide security for their users. They provide various levels of verification and allow users to rate and leave comments on people's profiles.

5. If you are planning on staying in a city for a long time, renting out an apartment is the best option. These furnished apartments are usually cheaper than hotels and give many more amenities like a kitchen, laundry, and TV room.

8 reasons why you need to work out

We give you eight reasons why you need to work out before your day officially begins

Some people will tell you that it makes absolutely no difference what time of day you work out at. They say that the result is the same whether you train at 7 am or 7 pm. Yet, fitness experts stress on the benefits of training first thing in the morning. Apart from building consistency and preventing you from waiting for your dumbbells, here are eight reasons why the early bird gets the worm.

Kickstarts your metabolism
Training in the AM hours also jump-starts your metabolism and helps keep it elevated for hours. In this way, your increased metabolism will be working — and burning more calories — while you are, instead of when your body is at rest. If you sit at a desk all day, you know that this is reason enough to get your engine running as soon as possible.

Gifts you energy
Exercising in the morning energises you for the day. So, if the weather and accumulated fatigue have you feeling less than active lately, you might want to try hitting the gym first thing in the morning. Doing so will release endorphins and other hormones to give you a much-appreciated boost that often lasts all day.

Clears your mind
Studies have also shown that exercise significantly increases mental acuity. Training early helps clear your head and put you in a healthy frame of mind. Working out before your day officially begins allows you to start each day with a fresh perspective as you destroy the stresses of the previous day with a bench-press or a run on the treadmill. This will help you reduce the chances of getting upset during the course of your new day.

Regulates your appetite
Many people find that morning exercise has a tendency to regulate appetite for the rest of the day. Not only do such people eat less (since activity causes the release of endorphins, which in turn diminishes appetite), they also choose healthier portions of healthier foods. You will discover that your meal times will get regularised and you don't experience as many cravings and serious dips in energy levels, which will deter binge eating.

Increases mental awareness
You may have noticed that you feel more alert and ready to take on whatever challenge life throws your way after a good workout. If you train before your day begins, you'll be better equipped to deal with the battles presented to you at work. In fact, working out increases your mental acuity for four to 10 hours after exercise. This is due, in part, to the increased flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

Increases discipline
Exercising in the morning gives you that gratifying feeling of knowing you've done something disciplined and good for you. It takes a great deal of motivation to get of bed, much more if you need to get to the gym. However, including that habit and finding the courage to get to the gym can drastically improve the quality of your life. Before you know it, the discipline it takes to work out every morning will spill over into other areas of your life and you'll be as driven in your cabin as you are on the elliptical machine.

Sleep better
Working out regularly results in better sleeping patterns and snooze quality. Your body will tell you that it's time for bed, but knowing that you have to get up to train the next morning will also help you hit the bed at a decent hour. It is difficult to build mass and improve your cardio if you don't rest properly.

Improves your diet
Exercising before eating could shock your system and it will usually throw your body into a catabolic state (where your body burns muscle for energy). Have a lowcalorie snack, such as an apple or some yogurt, about 30 minutes to an hour before you train. The snack will give you the energy you need for your training and it will burn off quickly. You'll crave better foods, and you won't want to waste the hard work that you put in by choosing cheeseburger over a healthy snack like a veg salad sandwich.

Is the canele the next big dessert?

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 23 Oktober 2013 | 18.47

The small canele pastry may well become the new 'lusted after' dessert

Heads up! A pint-sized dessert from the world of gastronomy is making a splash in patisseries and boulangeries abroad, that are selling it out like... well, hotcakes! It's the canele — a light French pastry that looks like a little bundt cake. The world has hardly gotten over the craze that the cronut created with long queues to buy it. So popular was the treat that supermodel Heidi Klum reportedly hired a private jet to fly her cronuts home. Will this one gather as much hype? Here's more on the canele...

What it is
From the Bordeaux region of France, the canele is a dome-like fluted pastry, barely two inches off the table, with a custardy filling and a thick crust. It is simple, not as fancy as the macaron or cupcake, and set in cylindrical mould that, with its many grooves that looks like a mini bundt pan. The canele is made from a crepe-like batter and baked for an hour or two, until it develops a dark, caramelised crust. It is then poured into its cylindrical moulds.

These little cakes with their caramelised crust and moist centre come flavoured with vanilla and a hint of rum and they get their name from the shape of the copper mould in which they are baked. The dessert gets nuances from the culinary heritage of Bordeaux and the surrounding region.

Have it with
The canele can be had a breakfast too, accompanied by fruits; otherwise it's perfect for tea time, sharing space with your cup of coffee or tea. You may also have caneles for dessert, with a dash of vanilla ice-cream.

Li'l history
It's said that citizens living near shipyards got hold of flour spilled on loading docks and used it to make the cakes for the poor.

Fashion: Solemate to the celebs

Shoe designer Aruna Seth tells Nona Walia why celebrities like Pippa Middleton, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Hudson wear her glittery heels.
Meet Aruna Seth. This London-based Indian shoe designer has a royal following. Her highend shoes are worn by Pippa Middleton, Kate Hudson, Olivia Munn, Mariah Carey, Goldie Hawn, and Jennifer Lopez.

Her secret: Every shoe has a comfort padding known to give 'cashmere-like comfort'. Her design philosophy is simple. "My shoes are instantly recognisable to my brand. Each shoe has a curve on the side to elongate the legs. I use signature embellishments like the crystal butterfly," she says.
Celebrity sole
British and American celebrities love the red carpet look her shoes give them. Goldie Hawn recently wore her Cinderella shoes embellished with 3,000 Swarovski crystals. Seth's 'Lynn' silver sandals sold out completely after Pippa Middleton wore them to the royal wedding reception, with her famous green Temperley London gown.
"Celebrities love wearing high heels because they make them appear slimmer and taller on the red carpet. It is insane how high some of them will go!" says Seth, who can tell the psyche of a girl by the shoe she wears. "I firmly believe in this. Girls who wear 6-inch heels are usually super confident. Ballerina girls love to be comfortable. Ladies who wear leopard print shoes are probably more adventurous than girls who stick to plain leather. Girls who wear Swarovski shoes want to feel like a princess. A shoe can tell you a host of things about a person. That's why I look at people's shoes first!" she says.

Signature style
The butterfly is Seth's signature motif. "I've always loved butterflies because they embody freedom and independence. I chose the crystal butterfly to embellish some of my first shoe designs. The butterfly shoe has become a bestseller worldwide; we now create the design in over 50 different colours — from white and aubergine to black — and fabrics from Chantilly lace, leather to satin. Brides specially love the designs, seeing a touch of crystal from underneath a wedding dress finishes off a dream look," she recounts.
India inspiration
Seth's shoe fetish began when she was young. Her multi-millionaire father worked in a shoe factory. "My father has been in the footwear industry for over 50 years so I've been surrounded by shoes and shoe designers all my life. It's in my blood!" she states. Her design inspiration comes from travelling. "I take a notebook everywhere with me to jot down ideas. I love coming to India. It is one of the best places for stimulation — the bright reds and golds, fantastic materials like silk and intricate handmade jewellery."
Aruna's footwear tips for brides-to-be

1. Pick the right heel-height. Stiletto-loving brides may need to compromise on heel-height; your husband could be embarrassed in wedding pictures if you are towering above him. 2. Comfort is the key. Don't follow glamour blindly. 3. Pick shoes suitable for the venue. For example, wedges and flats are best for garden weddings to save your heels from getting muddy. Flat sandals are good for beach weddings. 4. Treat your feet. Pedicures instantly make you feel relaxed, refreshed and special. Remember to schedule a pedicure before your big day. Slip your feet into your gorgeous wedding shoes with soft skin, neat cuticles and glossy nails.

Book Review: How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

Book: "How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia"; Author: Mohsin Hamid; Publisher: Penguin Books India; Pages: 228; Price: Rs.499.

Mohsin Hamid, the Pakistan-based author of best-selling novels like the "Moth's Smoke" and "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", shows what it means to get rich in a rising Asia in a new novel at a time when the developing economies in the region are straining to push up their GDP figures that have been slumping all too often.

"How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia", released last week, uses the format of the self-help and motivation book as a literary device to tell the story of the third son of a cook who leaves his village to move to a city, falls in love with a pretty girl and sets up an industry. He becomes a entrepreneur and "filthy rich".

Hamid takes his hero through 12 steps in 12 chapters to become a moneybag in a nameless city in South Asia that sizzles with energy, opportunity and inequality.

The writer says that he had initially started out with the idea that he was not going to name things and people because they mean certain things.

The idea of taking the names of the narrative - reminiscent of many avant garde writers like Lawrence Sterne, James Baldwin and James Joyce - is "liberating" for Hamid.

The ingrained view is that South Asia is an "exotic place, a peculiar place and a central place - it is a colonial mindset". It could have been any place - why not Lahore or Lagos? The writer explains his narrative without specifics, comparing it to the Sufi ghazals that he grew up with.

The songs invoking the nameless divine speaks to the listener or the exponent like the book that addresses the reader in a second-person narrative.

This is his third book and one inspired by the writer's personal fortunes. "I had just become a father and I wanted to write a novel about the tri-generational life," Hamid said in the capital.

Generations are a way of life in Pakistan, where young men often live with their parents and elders like Hamid, who shares his home with his parents.

The young and old play a cat-and-mouse waiting game.

This inter-generational divide is captured in a vivid clash of body language in a domestic confrontation between the "saas" and the "bahu".

"Your mother cleans the courtyard under the gaze of her mother-in-law. The old woman sits in the shadow, the edge of her shawl held in her mouth to conceal not her attributes of temptation but rather the lack of her teeth and looks on in unquenchable disapproval. Your mother is regarded in the compound as vain, arrogant and headstrong, and these accusations have bite, for they are all true. Your grandmother tells your mother she has missed a spot. Besides, she is toothless and holds a cloth between her lips, her words sound like she is spitting... The older woman waits for the younger woman to age."

Hamid spotlights on the society in Pakistan's middle-class fringe with refreshing psychoanalysis of the characters. But he punctuates his narrative and observations with sage advise that tends to sound like homilies at places, flagging in their intelligence like the scores of droll motivation manuals crowding the book-shelves.

"...As far as getting rich is concerned, love can be an impediment. Yes, the pursuit of love and pursuit of wealth have much in common," Hamid fritters in cliches, robbing pace off the narrative.

The book ends with death of the rags-to-riches hero - surrounded by his ex-wife, son and a pretty girl that the hero had been in love as a teen.

Hamid touches upon new South Asian realities - broken hearts, failed marriages, culture of corruption, politics, lifestyle pressures on fast street and the perennial near-war edge that Pakistan balances on.

The writer says his book tries to bring out a "narrative of loss" in a market of growth-based" language that does not equip us for loss. "Throughout history, human civilisations have been a series of narratives that talk of loss," the writer said.

Why brown rice is healthier than white

Brown rice doesn't taste as good but is nutritionally superior to white rice

There has been constant debate over white rice versus brown rice for decades. Although white rice seems to be a favourable choice for the majority of people for its appetising taste and appearance, brown rice wins hands-down when it comes to health benefits.

Says holistic health guru Mickey Mehta, "Brown rice is healthier since the refining process only removes the hull of the rice kernel, leaving its nutrition intact. On the other hand, the milling and polishing used to make rice white, strips off its essential nutrients and vitamins."

Technically speaking...
A cup of brown unpolished rice contains 88 per cent of manganese, 27.3 per cent of selenium, 20.9 per cent of magnesium, 18.7 per cent of tryptophan and only 12 per cent calories. The conversion of rice from brown to white destroys about 60 per cent of iron, 80 per cent of vitamin B1, 67 per cent of vitamin B3, 90 per cent of vitamin B6, 60 per cent of iron and almost half the phosphorous, manganese and dietary fibre naturally present in the rice.

Nutritious and wholesome
Packed with natural oils, brown rice is extremely heart-friendly. Due to its fibrous concentration, brown rice facilitates healthy bowel movement and promotes weight-loss.

A cup of brown rice fulfils about 80 per cent of the daily requirement of manganese in the body. Manganese helps in the formation of healthy cholesterol. Brown rice improves metabolism and keeps you feeling fuller for a long time.

Replacing white rice with brown rice in your diet can help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Says Mickey Mehta, "Like wheat, brown rice is also a type of whole-grain. Organically grown wild brown rice is the best as it is packed with all the essential nutrients and vitamins."
